$atori Zoom Delivers ‘Tyson’
Dark, foreboding, late night shots in a bathroom as a hooded Grim Reaper suddenly appears in the mirror, kicking off an intense race with Death by El Camino. While the song raps about letting loose, having fun, and indulging in lustful fantasies, the brand new music video for “TYSON” by LA rapper $ATORI ZOOM ($Z) on the other hand, subverts expectations
Releasing officially today, the new “TYSON” visual follows the single’s release earlier this summer destined for the brand new project from $Z to be announced at a later time. “Shooting the video was a vivid experience since it was the first time I got behind the wheel of an old El Camino, it was really fun to drive,” says $Z. “I definitely wanted to make something conceptual instead of the average performance scenes. I love how it all turned out.”
He continues, “‘TYSON’ is a return to form for me musically. I really went back to my roots on this one. There was a lot of energy in the room when we were making it. I knew this wasn’t just a club banger but one with some knockout power behind it. Overall, I just wanted to make a fun song with some aggressive undertones.”
Ever since his debut in 2017, $Z has expertly combined club and house beats, aggressive, bass boosted 2010s esque soundcloud tracks, and phonk and to create some of the catchiest, wildest rap that one can listen to. The perfect distillation of his style can be found on his latest record, early 2022’s ATTICA!, which encapsulates the hypnotic allure of $Z’s core-shaking beats and unapologetic lyricism. In addition, ATTICA! features an intro from Memphis rap legend DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia), reciting one of Muhammad Ali’s poems about the Attica prison riot.
“In creating ATTICA!, I wanted to create a genre defining moment for Phonk. Its roots are primarily based in Memphis with Three 6 Mafia. Artists and producers would grab samples from their work, fuse them with cowbells, and the rest would write itself,” explains $Z. “What I wanted to do was grab the most notable, popular, and influential producers of the genre and collaborate with them all, stitching all these tracks into a full length LP.”
“In the midst of sharing snippets of my work on my social media platforms, it wasn’t long before DJ Paul noticed what I was doing and reached out to me to show his support,” he says. “At the same time, I was deep in thought about what could tie this album all together under one big pretty bow. I soon reached an epiphany. ATTICA! would not be complete without the sealed stamp of approval and cosign from one of the genre’s pioneering artists, DJ Paul. I asked him if he’d be open to the idea of reciting one of Muhammad Ali’s poems about the Attica prison riots as an intro to the album. He was more than happy to contribute to the project. And that’s really how it all came about.”
From behind the bandana swept carefully under his signature L.A. cap, $atori Zoom is shrouded in the mystery and intrigue that comes with an artist on a rapid rise. As you peel back the layers on the West Coast hitmaker, it becomes apparent that you have unearthed a hidden gem treasured by his cult-like following. While this ethos serves as the foundation of his work, he hardly confines his imagination to a singular style. By approaching his art from a state of catharsis, his sound becomes as colorful as his daily range of emotions. While music began as a hobby for $atori Zoom in 2017, it escalated into his life’s calling in just a few short years.
The new music video for “TYSON” by $atori Zoom is out now. $atori Zoom’s latest record ATTICA! can be found on all DSPs. More music from $atori Zoom will be announced in the near future.Tweet
