Meet Calgary’s Indie Alternative Rock Band “Blue Basement”

Blue Basement is an Indie Alternative Rock Band just outside the city of Calgary. Deriving styles that are reminiscent of the Seattle grunge scene mixed in with the millennial generation pop-punk.  Classy Yet Grungy – New Indie Rock from Calgary

Alex Foster’s journey in music started relatively young, it was around 12 years old when he began to try things on the guitar. The first guitar he received was a little blue “Jay-JR” guitar, which he ended up leaving with an old friend, who used far more than Alex did. It took some time for Alex to pick up the guitar again.  When he was 14 a good friend came by and played ‘Blackbird’ by the Beatles – Alex was sold.  It was then that Alex began to realize the guitar was a way to genuinely express himself. A way to say more than was possible with lyrics alone. This changed the way Alex approached music and writing in general and made him want to improve and explore music with the guitar.

In April of this year (2022), Alex found himself fired without notice, so he suddenly had forced free time. He picked up a copy of Logic  as a way to learn how to record his music. Recording became far more engaging than his everyday work and he was instantly hooked. Learning through YouTube tutorials about different mixing techniques and experimentation became his passion. Aside from Alex’s musical endeavors, Blue Basement, a name derived from the blue painted walls, many memories made through music. Alex has played some live shows, as well as joining with other bands. Unfortunately, the level of drive and commitment to the craft didn’t last long enough for anything to get anywhere. Alex has always wanted to pursue music – and was always told he was too reserved- yet he loves to sing and perform for people. All he has wanted from music is to reach people, to express himself and share the experience of music.  Of course, music has the added benefit of joy, to wake up to practice and learn something every day.  A surprising result of having music in his life is the confidence singing has brought to him personally.  The positive reception and feedback from others, known and unknown, has had a profound impact on Alex’s pursuit of music.

If Alex had one thing he’d like to do, it is just to be able to play music and redo some of the songs his lack of experience earlier on didn’t allow him to do justice. Thank you again for this opportunity. Much love, and thank you to everyone who has supported Alex through this crazy endeavor of his.
