At the Helm of the Trading Cards Resurgence, Dappz Sports is Taking the Hobby to the Mainstream

The digital age has taken card collecting to new heights. From celebrities ferociously searching for rare, limited editions to the record-level attendance at 2023’s National Sports Collectors Convention (NSCC), the hype around the collection craze is as real as it gets. This fervent surge of the rediscovered pastime has not only shot trading cards back into the limelight, but the internet’s influence has inspired a completely new way for fans to come together on a shared passion for cards, sports, and the fandoms they all know and love.

No brand has capitalized on bringing trading cards as a hobby into the digital sphere more than Dappz Sports. Since 2020, the company has been live streaming 24/7 to showcase the latest trading card boxes and host online breaks for fans and collectors all over the world. In doing so, the company was the first in the hobby to leverage live shopping, where viewers can purchase the boxes being displayed directly from the stream in real-time. But the company’s online video efforts didn’t stop there. In the era of clips, shorts, and reels, Dappz Sports doubled down on their short video content creation — becoming viral sensations Tik Tok, Instagram, and YouTube.

In 2023, Dappz Sports solidified its place as the top content creator in the hobby as far as viewership — averaging 35 million monthly viewers across all platforms. With multiple viral videos that surpassed millions of views, from satire shorts of NFL games to slime challenges, the company separated itself from the pack with 1.2 million total followers across all platforms. Additionally, by pioneering the live-streaming game on Tik Tok Shop, Dappz Sports still reigns as the top of the live shopping market in the hobby, grossing over $20 million sales in 2023 on the platform.

“Our playbook is no secret,” said Matt “Dappz” McGuckin, of Dappz Sports. “We’ve built a loyal audience by consistently creating engaging content and constantly interacting with our supporters. We understand our audience deeply and strive to give them the content they love to see on a regular basis, while sticking true to our live-shopping roots that shot us to the top of the hobby.”

The Dappz Sports influence goes beyond numbers — the company is actively moving the culture of the trading cards hobby by engaging with the community at every level. McGuckin famously helped the legendary DJ and music producer, Steve Aoki, track down the Topps 2022 Star Wars Galaxy Chrome box, who linked up with Dappz to help him secure a rare, special edition Yoda card — which led to the hour-long chat between the two passionate collectors talking shop about everything in the hobby.

On the flip side, McGuckin is always on the ground at every convention engaging with the fans. Most notably, he also teamed up with Gary Vee at the 2023 NSCC to partake in free giveaways of hundreds of packs of VeeFriends (Gary Vee’s card collection) to fans at the event. The trust that Dappz Sports has built has led to sales numbers in the six figures per day while establishing key content deals with eBay, Fanatics, and Topps to further establish its position as a force to be reckoned with in the live-shopping landscape.

“Our numbers show that we’re lapping our peers because we’re genuinely resonating with sports fans across the globe. In 2024, we’re going to build off of this momentum to further prove that we are unrivaled when it comes to this space.”
