Health Watch: Summer time heartburn

When enjoying some of your favorite summer foods like a cocktail or barbecue the last thing you want is heartburn. It starts with a burning sensation in your chest or throat and difficulty swallowing. These are just some of the common symptoms with the onset of heartburn. More than 15 million Americans suffer from frequent heartburn – experiencing uncomfortable symptoms at least two times per week – and according to the Prevent the Summer Burn survey, nearly half of those polled noted that quintessential summer foods like hot dogs, ice cream and lemonade were among the biggest triggers.

Heartburn can be disruptive enough to cause sufferers to completely avoid leisure activities or social events. That is why The Hype Magazine took the time to speak with Internal medicine specialist, Dr. Keri Peterson via satellite from New York City to share results of the national “Prevent the Summer Burn” and common food triggers. Additionally, how when you’re eating and why can also play a role. Lastly, the emotional and psychological effects the condition has on some sufferers and their summer enjoyment.

Tell us about this survey and what the discomfort is all about.

The Prevent the Summer Burn survey was commissioned by store-brand Omeprazole an over-the-counter heartburn treatment, to learn how heartburn takes its toll during the summer season. Currently, 15 million people suffer from heartburn every single day, and the survey revealed that summer ranks as the worst season when it comes to suffering from heartburn. In fact, three-quarters of sufferers say that they would avoid barbecues and travel when their heartburn flares.

Why is summer seen as one of the worst seasons for these kinds of flare-ups?

A lot of our summertime favorite foods and beverages are triggers. Things like barbecue, wine, lemonade, fried, and spicy foods. Also, things like eating too much or too quickly or too late at night. Things like smoking and stress are also triggers.

Are there any solutions to summer heartburn?

For frequent heartburn sufferers the number one solution is Omeprazole! Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor or a PPI, which stops acid production and it’s taken as a tablet with water but luckily there’s a new form store-brand Omeprazole ODT. It’s a first of its kind oral dissolving tablet. It uses melt tech technology to melt in your mouth. It comes in a strawberry flavor and you can take it on the go without water and you can find it at food drug and mass retailers under the store brand label like Walmart Green, Walmart equate or CVS health.

Dr. Peterson, is there a difference between acid reflux and heartburn?

Reflux is when acid goes up into the Esophagus and heartburn is the symptom of pain and burning that you feel from reflux.

Where can we go for more information?
