Reema – Sunny Afternoon
Having already blown us away with the release of her stunningly beautiful single ‘Four Letter Words’ earlier this year, Berlin-based singer-songwriter Reema returns with a reimagined cover of The Kinks 1966 classic ‘Sunny Afternoon’.
With a family background rich in musical heritage, as her mother worked alongside Brian Eno and Roxy Music, Reema was raised on a diverse array of great and inspiring music, which has now led her to pay homage to those roots as she delivers her latest single.
Channeling the wistful poetry of frontman Ray Davies and adding her own beautiful vocals to it, ‘Sunny Afternoon’ sees the classic single revitalized for the modern era. Having grown up around powerful female vocalists such as Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks, Reema breathes beauty and wonder into the song, allowing her to not only transform the track with a far bolder production but enabling her to highlight her soaring voice as well.
Speaking about why she decided to cover the track, Reema said, “’Sunny Afternoon’ was actually the first song I learned to play when I was a kid. I had a ‘Best of The Kinks’ album that I played to death and a ‘Kinks’ songbook; I think I even had a badge… I don’t usually do covers and this is actually the first time I’ve recorded one, but a really lovely friend of mine in Berlin, Anja, said she’d love to hear me do a version of the song. This led to a jam between myself and an incredible producer and friend, Catcilla. He wrote a beautiful chord progression and after a couple of glasses of wine, I sang the song. We loved the performance because it reminded us of the atmosphere of that afternoon – apt, I know – and so Catcilla polished it into the track it is now while maintaining the ethos of the original recording.”
Reema is one of those artists that prefer to add stories to her music, but in this case, covering the song ‘Sunny Afternoon’ is a story in itself. She looks to pay homage to own influences, recapturing the feeling of hearing that single for the first time and delivering something that also allows her to showcase her incredible voice and unique direction in the process, a narrative she expands on through her self-illustrated artwork and self-made outfits worn on stage.
