Ancient Harvest

Ancient Harvest founders Stephen Gorad and Don McKinley were the first to bring quinoa to the U.S. market close to 40 years ago. It all started when Gorad was vacationing in South America. While in a market in La Paz, Bolivia, he saw a woman selling quinoa out of a sack. He asked what it was and ended up buying a kilo of it from her. He was eating a macrobiotic diet at the time, so he often looked for unusual or unique grains and was intrigued at the texture and taste when he cooked it. Gorad and McKinley formed relationships with local farmers, provided funds to build infrastructure, and began importing the product to sell at boutique supermarkets, health food stores and eventually major retailers as quinoa’s popularity spread. Today, Ancient Harvest still sources its Royal Quinoa from Bolivia, offering an heirloom seed that has not changed since the Incas cultivated it.

Heat & Eat Quinoa is the latest offering from Ancient Harvest, a leading quinoa brand in the US. Available in 3 flavors and made with simple, all-organic ingredients, each serving has up to 11 grams of protein. It can be used to make easy recipes right in a dorm room such as Quinoa Tabbouleh, Southwestern Quinoa Salad, and Mediterranean Quinoa Salad Jars.

The brand also gives back, partnering with non-profits that help improve the well-being of farm animals, the environment, and the health of the communities it serves. The plant-based brand has Los Angeles Laker JaVale McGee among its impressive roster of celebrity investors.

The newest PigOut flavor is Salt & Vinegar. I have always avoided “Salt & Vinegar” as a flavor, but in the case of PigOut, I actually enjoy it and can finish a whole bag of PigOut with that flavoring.

Casas De Hualdo Olive Oil

Casas De Hualdo is an award-winning Spanish olive oil company and sustainable farm located in rich area on the shores of the Tagus River, 30 kilometers away from the historical town of Toledo. Modern cultivation and irrigation systems allow Casas de Hualdo to craft unique oils, while preserving their natural heritage. The olives are 100 percent sourced from the Casas de Hualdo estate in central Spain, and the oil is extracted at the on-site mill within no more than six hours of harvest. To ensure freshness, the estate bottles the oils only on-demand.

My favorite offering from Casas De Hualdo is the Reserva De Familia offering, limited-edition and presented in numbered bottles. This special first day of harvest blend is made of 4 varieties (Arbequina, Picual, Cornicabra, Manzanilla). Complex, intense and with very long after-taste, it is ideal as finishing oil for arugala salads, radish and fresh onions. Taste it in full simplicity by dipping whole grain bread or pour a drizzle on cured sheep cheeses and tapas boards. Or choose it for more complex preparations like stews, stuffed peppers and lasagna.

National Hot & Spicy Food Day is coming up on August 19th. Just in time for that, the Jelly Belly Candy Company launched BeanBoozled Fiery Five, a line of increasingly hot jelly beans featuring the true-to-life flavors of sriracha, jalapeno, cayenne, habanero, and Carolina reaper, all falling on the Scoville Scale. Available on Amazon, JellyBelly.com and at retailers nationwide, the BeanBoozled Fiery Five lets brave taste-testers explore the world of spice one bean at a time. Players can use the new Beanboozled app that allows Jelly Belly fans to virtually “spin the spinner” and try their luck at which hot bean they will have to try.

Nature Valley’s Packed Bars

As Nature Valley’s website will tell you, they “believe that what you put in is what you get out.” Thus, “when you need to be great out there, you can” rely on the brand “for real energy, wherever and whenever you need it.” I had the pleasure of trying Nature Valley’s new Packed bars, which are billed as “Sustained Energy Bars.” Made with creamy almond butter, crunchy nuts and seeds and chewy blueberries, these bars carry 240 calories and 7 grams of proteins apiece. And if you don’t love them — which I don’t see how you wouldn’t — there is a “money back guaranteed” refund policy shown on the Packed box.

Lundberg Family Farms’ Organic Rice Cake Minis

Lungberg Family Farms’ rice cakes make for a light, bite-sized treat. A guilt-free, smart way to snack, these rice cake minis are made with organic whole grains and are carefully-crafted to be thin, lightly crunchy, and full of flavor. New to the product line is an Apple Pie flavor. Only 130 calories per 1-ounce bag with only 3 grams of sugar. The Apple Pie offering is organic and Non-GMO, although due to its whey content it is not dairy-free.

Earnest Eats’ Protein & Probiotic Oatmeal

Last but definitely not least is Earnest Eats’ Protein & Probiotic Oatmeal. Each box of this greatness from Earnest Eats includes 6 oatmeal packets, and each packet features hearty super grains blended with powerful whey protein and probiotics. Truly adaptable oatmeal, you can make a packet with hot water or milk, or in the microwave. I am a big fan of both the Apple Crush and Mighty Maple flavors from the brand, which also makes “Vegan Superfood Oatmeal Cups,” “Superfood Oatmeal Bags” and “Almond Butter On-The-Go Bars”; I haven’t yet tried those “On-The-Go Bars,” but we all have goals, don’t we?
