Melbourne’s Elme Shares Debut EP ‘Departures’

Melbourne alt-pop artist Elme has released his debut EP Departures. The EP reflects on self-discovery and relationships whilst delicately displaying Elme‘s effervescent style. Featuring singles ‘Kids’ and ‘Somewhere’, the four-track EP includes co-production from Woodes and Edvard Hakansson.

On Departures, Elme explains; ‘This EP started pretty much 5 years ago. I wrote a ton of songs while travelling, which over the years had a number of rebirths. All of these songs on some level are about self-discovery through introspection. I am fascinated by human reactions, emotions and what they can teach us about who we are and how we relate to others. I tend to work through this process by writing about the past, weaving memories into the songs, all of which came from different origins but seemed to lead to the same destination. I found that the trajectory of this self-analysis has meant that in order to remould my perspectives, I have also had to leave my prior comfortable opinions and even certain relationships behind. This felt exciting and sad at the same time. The title “Departures” captured the complexity of this in one word.’

Elme is the recording project of singer-songwriter and producer Thommy Wilson.
Wilson began his music career at 15, writing and recording music with his brother. After spending some time touring Europe and Australia as a professional dancer, he returned to music; using his multifaceted understanding of beat and rhythm to experiment with his music production. Collaborating with Melbourne contemporaries Elkkle, Woodes and Edvard Hakansson, Wilson shared his first single, ‘The Missing Piece’, under the moniker Elme in 2018, later releasing his second single ‘Kids’ in 2019.

With a vocal character rooted in singer-songwriter origins, Elme’s sound has evolved to blend elements of electronica and pop with his love of acoustic guitar and piano. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources, musical and otherwise, Elme’s music delivers captivating friction between sound textures, thoughts and colours to mirror the world around him. His velvety vocals, permeating melodies and lyrical nuance anchor his atmospheric production style.
