Madison Beer Named MTV’s Global PUSH Artist for the Month of March

Breakout singer-songwriter opens up about her decade-long career, releasing her first full-length album and finding her confidence as a songwriter

Today, MTV PUSH reveals singer-songwriter Madison Beer as its featured artist for March. On the heels of her first full-length album release, “Life Support,” she sits down with MTV to talk about her decade-long career, early musical beginnings, inspiration and talking full creative control on the album, plus shares two exclusive performances of hit song “Selfish” and the Tame Impala-inspired “Sour Times.

Highlights

On releasing her first full-length album after a decade-long career:

  • “This time and this moment, just having my debut album actually out for the world, it’s just very emotional for me. It’s a lot. I got signed 10 years ago and have been doing this for what feels like my entire life…I think I’m just kind of trying to take in this moment, trying to actually believe that I’m here. It’s a lot for me. it’s weird, it’s surreal.”

On what she hopes her fans will take away from “Life Support”:

  • “It’s me. It’s me being honest, real and vulnerable. These are real stories and events that actually happened, so it can be really intimidating, opening up like that. So I’m just excited and I hope it provides people and my fans with some sort of healing and gives them an outlet to use when they might be feeling emotional and need something to rely on”

On allowing herself to be completely vulnerable after a breakup to write “Selfish”:

  • “‘Selfish’ was a really emotionally-draining and eye-opening track to make. I’ve never really been vulnerable or honest on a song before and I felt like it was time I was. My persona, I guess, was very much “boss energy,” you know, “forget your ex, never reach out to them again, life moves on” kind of mantra was what I was preaching to my fans. Then I would feel guilty because I would go home and cry over my ex…so ‘Selfish’ was the first thing I let myself be open and honest about’

On “Sour Times” tackling the importance of consent:

  • “I hope my fans are able to say ‘no’ and that they understand the key of consent, and how important it is to stand by the way you feel and pay attention to how you feel.”

On pushing past feelings of intimidation to find her way as a songwriter:

  • “My relationship to songwriting only began recently. I wasn’t always a “songwriter” per-se, or I didn’t have enough confidence to be a songwriter. I was always intimidated by people in the room who might’ve had more credibility than me … Then I started realizing that [singing and songwriting] overlap a lot, and that me being able to write my own songs was going to give me a lot more connection to the music I was then performing.”

On where she wants to be in 10 years.

  • “I have a lot of goals and aspirations, and those are all great, but I also just hope that I continue to grow and flourish as a human being. That’s my number one thing…Winning a GRAMMY or a VMA would also be lovely.”

Throughout the month of March, MTV will roll out exclusive performances, interviews and personalized content to bring fans closer to Madison Beer across MTV’s on-air, digital and social platforms around the world.
