Nick Bonin Describes the Making of His Viral Hit “Fell Too Far” and What Inspired Him to Make the Song

Nick Bonin is an alternative-pop singer who began releasing music in 2019, most notoriously known for his viral hit single “Fell Too Far” which currently has over 50 million streams and counting. The 19-year-old singer-songwriter is one of the newest acts to sign to Roger Gengo’s Masked Records, a joint venture with Warner Records. Nick stopped for an interview to shed some insight on the making of “Fell Too Far” and what inspired him to write the song.

Nick, thanks for joining us. I am personally a big fan of your music and definitely am looking forward to learning more about your background & inspirations.

“Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Absolutely, thanks for having me.”

Of course. To start, I’d like to know more about what got you into music and who are some of your musical inspirations.

“What got me into music is that I was using music as a way to cope with depression, anxiety & recovery from addiction. I found music to be a great way to express myself – as for influences, I am a really big fan of the pop punk and emo scene & it was something that’s been around me since my early childhood. Bands like NOFX, All Time Low, Green Day, Taking Back Sunday and The Offspring are some of my favorites.”

What Is your creative process like? Is there anything unique you do to help you get in the zone for writing or recording?

“Usually I’ll find an instrumental that triggers something emotional within me and I’ll start writing to it. Uhm, something really weird is that I tend to intentionally be wearing shoes when I am working on music – if I’m not wearing them, something feels missing and I’ll go out of my way to put a pair on.“

Awesome! Tell me more about “Fell Too Far” – it’s clear that song was an emotional record for you. Where were you when you wrote it and what events inspired the lyrics?

“I was in my mom’s basement right after I had a fight with my girlfriend at the time. I felt like everything was hopeless and that my only choice was to let everything fall apart. I felt like love wasn’t something that I wanted to try again. Looking back, that pain was only temporary but I’m grateful for the feelings. “

Did you think “Fell Too Far” was going to be the record that put you on the maps? Why do you think it took off like it did?

“Not at all but I feel like every artist feels that way when a song blows up. I think it connected with a lot of people emotionally. Just seeing the comments left and the DM’s I’ve received, it left an impact on people. It seemed like I was able to take something dark from my past and give others something to connect with. “

Do you have any upcoming releases that you’re super excited for?

“Of course – I’ve got tons of stuff in the vault, but you’ll just have to wait and see. “

What is your favorite part about being an artist?

“Honestly just having the creative freedom to express myself and give people across the world something to enjoy and relate to. “

What is your best piece of advice for artists out there just getting started?

“Just continue to grow on the type of music you really like to make and stick to what feels right. You can always use it as influence and chasing trends never works.“
