Jay-Way Returns With Imaginative New Visual For “Coolie”

Rising Afro-Dutch artist Jay-Way returns with his highly anticipated new single, “Coolie”. Available today, the release also includes an additional track entitled, “Legend”.

“Coolie is the first song I recorded from home,” says Jay-Way, who continues to redefine the depths of black creative expression through his music. “We were in a strict lockdown during that time so we couldn’t visit studios. I built a little set up at the crib and made it happen.”

Jay-Way returns to his rappity-rap base with “Coolie”. “I wanted to take a little break from the melodic stuff.” His flow and rhyme schemes on “Coolie” are reminiscent of his award-winning debut EP Jaynalysis. Vocal about his love for American hip-hop culture, Jay reminds fans that he is still an emcee. “I missed rapping and wanted my new audience to know that I’m not just a singing artist,” he adds.

Directed by Joachim Spruijt, “Coolie” is a provocative, fast-paced music video. The self-proclaimed “black Avril Lavigne” wears a glittery ensemble that seems more Ziggy Stardust. Jay-Way raps effortlessly over a thumping beat, while dodging oppositions with a bag filled with his own currency – literally. He proceeds to avoids topics like drug use and sex, and acknowledges his faith-based roots with the lyrics, “God got me, so you know what it is, ain’t no reason to be stressin’ out.” “Coolie” is enhanced with visuals of Jay-Way rocking a mohawk that nods to the grit of rock & roll.

Jay-Way expands on that edginess with “Legend”, a song originally recorded during the fall of 2020. “They opened the studios again and I got in touch with the guitar player Yeezo (Polo G, Trippie Redd, Lil Keed) through instagram.” The track’s tone is comparable to those featured on his EP No, I’m Not Ok. “He sent me this guitar loop and it gave me pop-rock vibes that I grew up listening to. I put my main producer Dayme on it and I freestyled the first verse and we were in love with it and finished it months later.”

About Jay-Way

Jay-Way is redefining hip-hop music. Based in Amsterdam, he brings a broad, boundary-breaking perspective to the genre, filling his songs not only with the street-smart swagger of rap, but also the modern melodies of pop, the laidback cool of old-school soul music, and the optimistic outlook of gospel. It’s a sound that hasn’t just set him apart from his contemporaries; it’s made him a genuine star at home and abroad, too, with songs like “Happen Dappen” topping Spotify’s NL Viral Chart while racking up nearly 2.5 million streams. Arriving in 2020, No, I’m Not OK follows the previous releases Jaynalysis, No Life No Wifi, and Teen Gohan, mixing Jay-Way’s most pop-influenced songs to date with lyrics about trusting your gut and rising above your obstacles.
