Christian Finnegan On His New Special “Show Your Work,” Comedy During & After COVID-19, Future Career Plans & More

Founded by Brian Volk-Weiss, Comedy Dynamics — a Nacelle company — is reportedly the largest independent comedy production and distribution company. The company has produced Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning series Down To Earth with Zac Efron, The Movies That Made Us, The Toys That Made Us, Behind The Attraction for Disney+, Sony’s Mad About You reboot, Netflix’s Kevin Hart’s Guide To Black History, The CW’s Discontinued, All The Way Black for BET+, Animal Planet’s Animal Nation With Anthony Anderson, the scripted comedy on Hulu There’s… Johnny!, History’s Join Or Die With Craig Ferguson, MTV2’s Wild ‘N On Tour, History’s Center Seat: 55 Years Of Star Trek, and more. In 2017 the Comedy Dynamics Network launched and currently distributes specials, television shows and films to all major transactional platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, Google, PlayStation, Xbox, Tubi, Peacock, Pluto TV and most major telco & satellite providers, including AT&T, Comcast, Charter, Dish, Verizon, and Samsung TVs. 20 Comedy Dynamics releases have been GRAMMY-nominated (with 4 wins), including all 5 albums in the “Best Comedy Album” category for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019.

Show Your Work is a new standup special from Christian Finnegan — as released by Comedy Dynamics this month — about playing the hand you were dealt. Filmed in a tiny backyard at the height of the pandemic, Finnegan brings his brand of hilarious and insightful “social autopsy” to topics that range from the dumb (pharmaceutical names, baguettes) to the, well, super-dumb (QAnon). More than that, Show Your Work celebrates the determination to keep moving forward when the world has gone haywire. Great comedy special aside, Finnegan is someone you ought to remember from VH1’s Best Week Ever, the long-running sitcom Are We There Yet? and Chappelle’s Show. His most recent stand-up album was 2019’s 60% Joking, following releases via Warner Bros. and Comedy Central Records.

On October 29, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Christian Finnegan via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Show Your Work, we talked comedy during and after COVID-19, the importance of stand-up specials to him, the status of the Q.E.D. venue his wife Kambri Crews runs, future plans and more. Additional information on Finnegan and Show Your Work can be found here, here and here.
