Who is Jasmine Johnson?

Jasmine Johnson, founder of SessionsWithJas, originally started her craft in 2016 by writing for RESPECT. Magazine in which she left a major impact in the journalism field with her writing and interview skills. She later wrote for The Source Magazine which later landed her first major publication by interviewing Angela Yee, Karen Civil and more media mavens, covering the National African American Museum in Nashville and more.

Jasmine created her own platform SessionsWithJas in July 2020 during the pandemic that launched her own digital and print magazine with your favorite stars including NLE Choppa, KenTheMan, Travis Porter and more.

Hype: Where are you from and when did you first fall in love with hip-hop?

JJ: Nashville, Tennessee; when watching 106 & Park on BET growing up.

Hype: Who were your early influences and inspirations?

JJ: It was Karen Civil. Seeing both of them perfecting their craft and how they grew as a media maven despite the negativity, it taught her to keep going no matter what! To be strong and go stand ground on the brand.

Hype: What does success mean to you?

JJ: Success means by giving back to anyone who has supported you!

Hype: How’d you get into your career and why?

JJ: Starting in 2016, I worked for RESPECT. Magazine which got me into the position, in which, it helped me perfect my craft to be the journalist I am today. Then in 2017, The Source had given me the opportunity to do what I love by interviewing and covering concerts for the hip-hop nation.

Hype: What is Sessions With Jas?

JJ: SessionsWithJas started in July 2020 by sitting in my living room, and my friend had encouraged me to do it. It is a platform for artists, influencers, creatives, and more to tell their story. It grew to become one of the best platforms that can curate their own magazine for artists in the entertainment industry.

Hype: How can your platform benefit the rising artists?

JJ: By featuring them as the next top rising artists in my spotlight sessions or they can be on the cover of it as the next issue.

Hype: What is hip-hop missing and what can you bring it?

JJ: Missing the story telling. Many are rapping about the same thing and that they should stand out and be different from the norm.

Hype: What’s your biggest challenge that you’ve overcome as a female in the media?

JJ: Constantly being told NO! It makes you want to give up but the relationships are key! I keep telling myself to keep striving and keep going no matter what the answer. When you consistently let them see what your brand is all about and the person who is behind it? Nobody I mean NOBODY can stop you.

Hype: How have you made this challenge your strength?

JJ: By having a lot of no’s and a few yes’s can challenge you. When making sacrifices and believing in your brand, people will see and believe that and inspire to create their own without no limitations.

Hype: What’s next for you in 2022?

JJ: Big things on the way as more interviews and partnerships with the brand. SessionsWithJas will be turning 2 and a lot of announcements are coming soon!
