Indio Ink’s Hit Single ‘Runaway’ is About to be Your New Fall Anthem

Fall is here, and it’s high time you buttoned up your flannel shirt and got cozy by the bonfire with a brew in one hand and a Bluetooth speaker in the other.

If you’re looking for something to blast from that speaker to set the vibes and get the entire backyard bumping, Indio Ink has you covered. Their new hit single “Runaway” is the perfect combo between euphoric guitar melodies and melancholy lyrics. It’s the ultimate song to cruise along with the windows down in the car and the crisp fall air on your face.

“Go ahead, no need to wait for me / I know right where I want to be / Somewhere singing my song / Singing my song / Somewhere singing my song.”

Every fall anthem needs two things: a moody instrumental background and melancholy lyrics you can sing along to. The unique sound of lead singer Indio Downey’s voice paired with the band’s signature raw, relatable edginess delivers everything you need for grooving out this autumn.

Indio was just twelve years old when he got his first guitar and started working his way toward making hit singles. His Led Zeppelin and Nirvana inspirations are evident in his bottom-heavy, raw, and acoustic style, yet their sound is completely new and disparate from anything you’ve ever heard.

You might recognize Indio’s sound from his previous band “The Dose” which released their first EP Saline in 2018. While his personal sound hasn’t changed much, the vibe of his music and the passion behind it has shifted.

“I find music to be an extension of my emotions – whether it’s angst or love or anything in between,” says the singer, “Music is my spirituality.” Considering this single is just one of many songs slated to come out on their first EP soon, we’re excited to see how much more of his personality shines in these songs.

But Indio isn’t creating anthems all by himself. He’s joined by classically trained musicians like Emily Dickinson on vocals and keys. Emily’s voice shines just as bright as her ability to harmonize on the piano with ease, and her experience playing philharmonics in jazz bands is underwritten in the underlying velvety tones of “Runaway.”

“I want to give people the impression I get when I hear good music,” says the vocalist. It’s this mindsight that makes the group stand out from many that stand before them as well as those who are slated to come after them.

But she’s not the only member of the band heavily influenced by the roots of jazz. The lead guitarist, Cristóbal, was raised on all types of music and has been playing guitar since the young age of eight. Heavily influenced by his father, Cristóbal’s love of music is family made and literally in his blood.

Indio Ink’s new sound is perhaps best described by the guitarist himself, who refers to their music as a “… sonic journey through overcoming life’s obstacles and discovering who we truly are.” With that comes the ability for us as the audience to grow and learn alongside them.

Indio Ink’s rhythm section is filled out by the driving bass lines of Alex Pitta. Based in San Diego, Alex brings a grounding low end to the project that hits you right in the chest after the emotionally charged intro to ‘Runaway.’ The sonic background of the track is largely driven by the forward motion of the rhythm section that Alex co-pilots with drummer Jackson Morris.

Finally, those heavy beats that you’re hearing throughout the entire song that make it impossible not to tap your foot? Those are thanks to Jackson Morris, who’s been playing the drums since age three.

Jackson found his niche as the lead drummer of RUSH, Neil Peart. Because of Neil’s influence, combined with extensive education through music and drumming classes, Jackson continues to elevate his craft and take his music to whole new dimensions.

When you take so much pure talent, add in some catchy lyrics, and then throw on an easy-to-love beat, you get a song like this one.

“Runaway” is the perfect followup to the band’s hit debut single, “Headspace,” because it showcases everything the group set out to accomplish. It’s raw, yet the lyrics here are wildly relatable to anyone who’s ever found themselves overthinking the superficial aspects in their life and wanting to escape that repetitive and exhausting reality.

“On your story says you’re boring, with a photo of yourself / But with every other picture it’s another cry for help / I’m not there / I don’t care / I don’t care.”

It’s a song about being weighed down, getting trapped in a routine, and wanting to break free from the blandness. It’s a place we’ve all been and can all relate to, but the band’s signature style has turned these lyrics into something to dance to, sing to, and party to.

Blasting it at full volume takes us back to the early 2010s when bands like Paramore were shifting the alt rock genre into a new millennium. Yet something about Indio’s cadence in conjunction with grungy and authentic instrumentals are a match made in musical heaven.

It’s a gorgeous little throwback that’s colored by the shades of Nirvana and RUSH, but at its core it is polished by a sentimentality that we’ve never heard before.

Indio Ink already has over 200,000 song plays on Spotify, and has racked up over 40,000 monthly listeners despite having only released two songs so far. We advise you to hop on the bandwagon now before they skyrocket into the mainstream.

The band also dropped an accompanying music video for “Runaway” and is planning on releasing their first EP soon. We can only imagine that their new songs are going to be just as essential to your “windows down” discography and your bonfire playlists.

You can see what the band is up to by joining their 60,000 followers on Instagram (@indioinkband) to make sure you’re the first person to hear their new EP when it drops. Until then, we don’t blame you for playing “Runaway” on repeat until you’re running away from your reality too.
