Ioanna Talks New Music, Fame, & More

Ioanna (“YOU-WA-NA”) takes to her music to new crowds in Vaughan Mills Mall. We caught up with her to speak on the new music and what’s next.

Let’s jump right into your next single, “WORST PART” — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?

I was having a really hard day, and just had a lot of pent up feelings before going to the studio. You know when you’ve been holding something in for too long it starts to spill out of you? You can’t lie about it as easily anymore? So being at the studio, it’s hard to lie to yourself and hide from your own feelings…that’s when the ‘WORST PART’ was born. It was really quick how the song came to be, and listening back made me super sensitive but also relieved at the same time.

As a songwriter, when you sit down to pen your lyrics where do you draw your inspiration from?

Usually how I am feeling in that moment, or the complete opposite – wanting to elicit a completely different emotion to not feel how I am feeling. I love to tell stories, but when it hits closer to home it’s hard to open up as Ioanna the person and share the raw struggles/emotions I have faced. It’s vulnerable and scary.

How do you classify your overall sound and / or style?

My overall sound is pop/rnb – I love meshing different sounds and styles of all types.

What do you want people to get from your music?

I want people to be present, whatever frustration or trouble that might be the reality in that moment – I want to take that away for a few minutes, a time where there is joy, feeling, a moment you’re living in in that space only.

What was it like previewing the song to some strangers as the song is coming out on the 20th?

It was a lot of fun, I was really surprised and humbled by the feedback I got and it kind of eased my worry about releasing something a little more personal. People liked that the track was very relatable.

Where can people find you?
