The Power of Rhyme: Prakash Neupane’s Socio-Political  Commentary through Rap

Prakash Neupane, a rising star in the Nepalese hip-hop scene, has been using his  music to shed light on the socio-political issues facing his country. At the age of 25,  Neupane has emerged as one of the most promising artists in the new wave of  Nepali hip-hop. In his music, he fearlessly critiques the corruption that is running  rampant in Nepal’s government and bureaucracy, and he shines a light on the  struggles of marginalized communities.

Neupane’s socio-political commentary is at the heart of his music. Through his  lyrics, he seeks to call attention to the issues that are affecting Nepalese society. He  does not shy away from the uncomfortable truths that need to be confronted.  Instead, he uses his music as a platform to express his ideas and call for change.

One of the primary issues that Neupane addresses in his music is corruption.  Corruption is a pervasive problem in Nepal, and it has a significant impact on the lives of Nepalese citizens. Neupane recognizes this, and he has taken aim at the  corrupt politicians and bureaucrats who are enriching themselves at the expense of  the people they are supposed to serve.

In his music, Neupane speaks truth to power, calling out the corrupt officials who  are siphoning off public funds and ignoring the needs of their constituents. He is not  afraid to use his platform to shine a light on the darker corners of Nepalese politics,  and his music is a rallying cry for those who are fed up with the status quo.

Neupane’s music is also focused on the struggles of marginalized communities in  Nepal. He recognizes that many people in Nepal are living in poverty and facing  discrimination based on their ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. In his music,  he speaks up for these communities and calls for greater equality and social justice.

For example, in one of his most popular songs, “Arajakniti,” Neupane addresses the  issue of gender-based violence. The song tells the story of a young girl who was  raped and killed. Through his lyrics, Neupane also highlights the prevalence of  domestic violence in Nepal and calls for an end to the culture of silence that allows it  to continue.

Another significant socio-political issue that has deeply affected Nepal is the civil  war that took place from 1996 to 2006. The conflict arose between the government  of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), which aimed to establish a

socialist republic in the country. The war resulted in the loss of thousands of lives,  displacement of millions of people, and widespread human rights violations.

The conflict had its roots in the unequal distribution of wealth and power in Nepal,  with many marginalized communities feeling left out of the political process. The  Maoists took advantage of this and launched a violent campaign against the  government, leading to a brutal civil war that lasted for a decade.

In his music, Prakash Neupane has also addressed the impact of the civil war on  Nepalese society. In his song “Bang Bang,” Neupane reflects on the suffering that the  war brought to the people of Nepal.

Through his music, Neupane also highlights the ongoing struggle for justice and  accountability for the human rights violations that were committed during the  conflict. He is not afraid to speak out against the impunity that has allowed those  responsible for the violence to evade justice.

Furthermore, Prakash Neupane has also used his music to raise awareness about  police brutality and the need for police reform in Nepal. In his song “Bang Bang and  Satta,” Neupane highlights the abuse of power by law enforcement officials and the  corruption that is rampant in the police force.

The song raises the issue of police brutality and the impact it has on Nepalese  citizens. In one of the verses, Neupane says, “Tyo Goli Chalaune Prahari Lai Rokne  Hamle Kasari?” “(How to stop the police who is shooting their own citizens?).”

Neupane’s music is a powerful tool for social change. Through his rhymes, he is able  to convey complex ideas and emotions in a way that resonates with his audience.  His music has the power to inspire people to action and to bring attention to issues  that are often overlooked. In a country like Nepal, where the media is heavily  censored and the government is often resistant to change, music is one of the few  avenues for dissent.

Neupane’s rise as a socio-political rapper is a testament to the power of art to effect  change. His music is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, creativity and  passion can make a difference. As he continues to speak truth to power, he is  inspiring a new generation of Nepalese artists to use their voices to fight for a better  future.
