Live Session: Jasmine Guy talks new BET Series ‘The Quad’

There is no better time than now for an insightful television program like The Quad, BETs new series set on the campus of a fictitious Historically Black College (HBCU), Georgia A&M. The series addresses critical thinking, engagement with others and integrity to give a short list of scenarios. Throughout the history of our country, change has been sparked from college campuses at critical points in the story of America. Since their inception, HBCUs have been key players within those history-changing moments.

The Hype Magazine got some time from Six-time NAACP Image Award winner, Jasmine Guy, who plays Professor Ella Grace Caldwell in the new series. Guy, who’s tied to important HBCU projects like Spike Lee‘s “Do The Right Thing” and “A Different World” is now part of a third. Ironically, Guy never graduated college though HBCU life has been a constant for her. Her father worked at Morehouse and this became her playground literally and Guy’s launchpad into performing.

In the conversation, Guy gives us the rundown on how closely the show connects with current global issues as well as giving an in-depth story on dealing with ego, insecurity, and destructive feelings of self-importance. She also describes her interaction with the main character Eva, the newly elected President of the university and how those scenes deliver messages relevant to our daily relationships. The screener provided by BET was awesome but speaking with such a great mind and talent gave so much more!

Here’s the official line on The Quad

Tune into BET’s upcoming anticipated new series THE QUAD, now premiering on February 1 at 10pm ET.

THE QUAD follows the ambitious yet secretive life of EVA, the newly elected President of Georgia A&M (an HBCU), her administration, and the entering freshman class. Our freshman are led by ZOE, Eva’s rebellious daughter, CEDRIC, a talented rapper on the come up, and BOJOHN, who is looking to achieve victory and success as the school’s first white starting quarterback.

The staple of Georgia A&M is their prestigious marching band led by their charismatic yet ruthless leader, ART DIAMOND. Art’s power and influence proves a challenge to Eva but she manages to find strong allies in ELLA GRACE, Dean of the history department, and football coach, EUGENE HARDWICK.

Though the students and faculty of THE QUAD come from different places and face different challenges, one similarity remains—everyone is looking to make a name for themselves at Georgia A&M.
