Toronto-Based 3409 Share the New Urban-Pop Track “Pistol”

Toronto-based urban pop band 3409 effortlessly moves between dance, hip-hop, and world music to create a blend of rhythm and blues wrapped in youthful enthusiasm. Using laid back atmospheric production, their songs are centered on the contrast between Dante’s swagger-laden storytelling and Ro’s vulnerable delivery. Together the four-piece create anthemic memoirs for those pursuing self-discovery and happiness, despite the trials life may throw their way.

3409’s new single “Pistol” was inspired by Houstatlanta trap with the addition of Spanish guitars for a western feel that shows off the group’s playful approach to creating music.

What makes the video for ‘Pistol’ different from past work?

We’d never shot a video outside of the country before, especially not when the country was locking down and dealing with a pandemic. The shoot itself was as chaotic as the actual visual. We were in Los Angeles for maybe 4 days, everything was shutting down, it was rainy, but we were in California and enjoyed ourselves anyways. It’s also the first time we’ve ever shot with a full crew and extras. All-in-all it was an incredible experience.

Can you describe the concept behind the video?

We’re a band of four bandits planning our last heist before starting a new life. Classic western tropes abound.

How would you describe your artistic evolution throughout your career?

We’re still evolving quite rapidly since we just started releasing last year. We’re still figuring out exactly how to blend our influences together but we’re starting to really lean into this lane between hip-hop, r&b, and pop. We’ve also gotten comfortable tracking weird noises and sounds because sometimes the most random thing can complete a song.

What’s been the biggest change in your life over the past year?

Easily the pandemic. No live shows, harder to hold sessions with other artists, and increased visibility on all social media platforms. It’s such a weird time to be a musician and has forced us to be more creative and thoughtful than we were before.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written?

“The Circle of Life” by Elton John & Tim Rice. Or “Hold On We’re Going Home” by Drake.
