From Casino Games to TikTok Fun: Card Games Remain Massive in 2020

In the middle of November, Deadline reported that Mattel and Propagate Content are looking to adapt Uno into a TV game show. It is expected that the show will see four teams battle it out to be named champions, while it will also include audience participation and trivia. Deadline added that Mattel had previously looked into creating an Uno game show with the Gurin Company.

Another notable card game-related development has been the launch of a new TikTok edition of What Do You Meme? Tubefilter reports that the game revolves around players matching photo cards and captions to create entertaining combinations, with the TikTok edition giving proceedings a fresh twist. The new version includes cards featuring popular creators and players can scan a QR code to see the original videos referenced.

A digital connection

Both reports hint at how card games are still going strong at the moment, but the What Do You Meme? news also highlights how the offline pastime has effectively forged a link with the digital world in recent years.

That game is far from the only example of this, as many classic experiences that revolve around traditional playing cards have also enjoyed a new lease of life online. Royal Panda’s page on blackjack games highlights this perfectly, as it showcases how such sites are now able to offer a host of variations of the game to their members. The likes of Free Bet Blackjack and Double Exposure Blackjack sit alongside live versions of the game, where real-life dealers host the action via online video services. Many of the variations can also be played on both desktop and mobile devices.

Another intriguing card game that has found an audience in the digital realm in recent years is Gwent. Arguably the most fascinating thing about the game is that it actually has its roots in video gaming, as the official Witcher wiki on Fandom details how it was featured in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. However, it has become a standalone game in its own right in more recent years and it was also recently confirmed that a new expansion is set to be released. The official site explains how Way of the Witcher will offer 70 new cards including Witchers and a host of monsters.

Ask anyone for their thoughts on gaming at the moment and the chances are that their mind will immediately wander to discussions about video games, eSports and exciting new console innovations.

However, whether they are played online or offline, card games remain an enduring part of our entertainment and culture and are clearly still going strong today.
