OMD’s Andy McCluskey On The “40 Years – Greatest Hits” Tour, Future Plans, ZZ Top, Creativity & More

Over the past four decades — give or take a decade-kong break — OMD have sold over 40 million records worldwide, establishing the group as both electronic synthesizer pioneers and one of Britain’s best-loved pop groups. Led by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, OMD notably conquered the United States with the 1986 hit “If You Leave” from the Pretty In Pink soundtrack, but OMD have also achieved 12 top 20 hits on the UK Singles Chart and three top 20 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. OMD’s early discography also includes the benchmark-raising classics Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1980), Organisation (1980), Architecture & Morality (1981) and Dazzle Ships (1983).
Three more albums have come about since OMD’s reactivation 12 years ago, including 2017’s The Punishment Of Luxury. The band’s incredible career and 40th anniversary was initially celebrated last year with the release of a momentous anniversary box-set, Souvenir. Further in support of that long-term success is the 40 Years – Greatest Hits tour. This Spring 2022 tour kicks off on April 22, 2022 at Orlando’s Plaza Live, eventually wrapping on May 26, 2022 at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre.
On February 28, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with OMD co-founder Andy McCluskey — who also found success outside of the group writing for other artists — via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond that 40 Years – Greatest Hits tour, we discussed creativity and future plans for OMD. More on OMD and its touring plans can be found online by clicking here, here, here, here and here.
