0Catching Up With Kevin Brewer, Co-Founder of the Jabbawockeez
The Jabbawockeez are a world-renowned dance crew best known for their outstanding performances and innovative choreography. On Thursday, November 17th, the group took to the stage once again at the 23rd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards. During his set, Puerto Rican superstar Rauw Alejandro welcomed the Jabbawockeez onstage, and together, they delivered a rousing routine to his hit song “Punto 40“ which brought the crowd to its feet.
The Jabbawockeez dance crew has been delivering jaw-dropping performances for over a decade now, and their appearance at the 2022 Latin GRAMMY Awards was no exception. It’s no surprise that the crew continues to be in high demand; their unique blend of artistry and athleticism is unlike anything else in the dance world. In January 2022, the crew was named to the Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame.
If you’ve never seen them perform live, you can watch the Jabbawockeez mesmerize and entertain in their new show at MGM Grand Las Vegas!
We caught up with Kevin Brewer, co-founder of the Jabbawockeez to weigh in on their performance during Latin music’s most important night, the crew’s global impact on the fabric of the dance and movement communities, and the reality that street dance is now one of the most pervasive influences in the dance world overall.
From San Diego to America’s Best Dance Crew to now performing for Latin music’s most important night, has it marinated that the crew is one of the most impactful global representatives of dance and movement?
“It’s slowly getting there. We stay so active that we rarely take the time to consider being recognized this way. It’s definitely humbling and an honor.”
With your Vegas residencies to major sporting events you’ve wowed millions, what does it mean for you to showcase during the 23rd Latin GRAMMY Awards?
“Our presence at the Latin Grammys is big for us because it’s another step towards building that relationship with our Latin familia.”
What most excites you about this moment in your history?
“Its an opportunity to stretch our current borders”
There was a time when street dancers were not recognized as true artists and over time have made some of the most important contributions to the fabric of dance culture, your thoughts on this evolution?
“Street dance is the most adaptable sibling of dance culture. It’s a mix and interpretation of all of it’s elder siblings combined with its own unique origin. This is why it has evolved and will continue to evolve”
What’s the most satisfying for you as a collective about the global explosion celebrating street dance in just about every facet of entertainment, from BC One and beyond?
“The fact that street dance has reached across the globe and has been embraced by every group of people is most satisfying. It shows that it will have longevity as a valid form of artistic expression”
I guess most importantly, why do you dance?
“We have found it to be our purpose.”
Any motivating thoughts to pass on to aspiring dancers?
“Trust your instincts and stay humble.”
Lastly, what’s been the one question we as media have failed to ask you that you’ve always wanted to answer?
“over the span of our career, media has done a great job at extracting all the juice. No complaints here”
The Jabbawockeez always deliver exciting performances, their precision choreography and synchronization are unmatched in the dance world, and we can’t wait to see what they do next!
