Single Review: Seffo’s ‘Drama’ May be one of the Most Controversial in 2024.

A drug-fueled party with Democrat leaders and their offspring? Gender trouble with Republican senators? STDs with former presidents? Syrian American artist Seffo leaves nothing on the table with upcoming ‘Drama,’ his scorching song about an American political and cultural landscape that has never felt crazier.

Seffo has released his latest single, ‘Drama,’ which offers an eye-opening look at the chaos of modern America.

For those who haven’t yet encountered his music, Seffo is a Syrian American artist whose songs pack a hell of a punch. Born in South Carolina, Seffo was raised as a young boy in Syria, where he grew up living with his grandmother and speaking Arabic.

When he eventually moved back to the States while still young, he felt like he struggled to fit in there, too, since Arabic was his first language, and he found it difficult to learn English.

As it happened, rap music played a massive part in Seffo’s learning. Aided by the lyrics of artists like Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, Biggie, and Nicki Minaj, Seffo got some crucial lessons about mastering all that the language had to offer.

He developed an abiding love for rap music. And he didn’t just appreciate it as a spectator; he also wanted to make it. Seffo began writing lyrics as young as ten before eventually recording his tracks further down the line.

Now, in his early 20s, Seffo has honed in on a style that is intellectual, unapologetic, and captivating. His 2023 single ‘Rebirth’ was a beautiful distillation of how a creative person can find their confidence in the world.

But ‘Drama’ is easily his most exciting song yet – although it will divide opinion.

‘Drama’ shows how great music artists struggle to make it in modern America, where drama seems to be the only thing people value. To make his point, Seffo looks at the most extreme public figures causing drama in today’s America, including Hunter Biden, Donald Trump, and Kanye West. In the song, Seffo imagines himself attending a surreal party with some of these figures – and he can’t help feeling that he’s getting caught up in the drama himself. The song’s end feels like a plea for sanity in a time of division in America.

Speaking about the track, Seffo elaborated, “This song is polarising at the surface level, but when further dissected, it can bring people together. Celebrities and politicians are held in high regard; we go home and think about them or even talk about them, but little do we know they are more detached from people than what the media makes it seem.

“The only difference is that we go home to our struggling lives, while they go home to their mansions, not even thinking about their fans/supporters one second. People have created a parasocial relationship with celebrities/politicians that can be distracting and divisive to our shared commonality.”
