0The Hype Magazine Interviews D. Woods
Following her departure from MTV's Making the Band spawned multi-platinum all-female quintet Danity Kane back in October of 2008, Wanita Denise Woodgett, or D. Woods as she's professionally known, has steadily been rebuilding her own solo career in entertainment, while at the very same time continuously trying to separate her-self from the recently reunited popular girl group from whence she came — Let's talk shop with the founder/CEO of Woodgrane Entertainment, Miss D. Woods…
How did you discover your musical talent?
I discovered my love for music through my love for dance. I started dance at the age of 3, and everything snowballed from there.
Who have been your greatest inspirations musically and why?
The early voices I studied and mimicked were my parents favorites; Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston. Of course Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson was and is a huge influence on me. I loved all the groups like En Vogue, TLC, SWV…I love Brandy, Missy Elliott, Outkast, Lauryn Hill. I really got into Stevie Wonder as a writer and composer. And, a lot of musical theater — We could keep going, but that would take all day.
What do you feel you offer the music industry that we don't already have in other performers?
First of all, I'm offering ME! That's always going to be different. I always want to create an experience with my projects — Take the music off the speakers and into your life.
Have you encountered any problems in getting to this point in your career?
Of course! Nothing worth having is easy.
When can we expect some new music from you?
I just released my latest single, “GOLD MINE,” available on iTunes and online everywhere!
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
Never giving up!
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would collab with Janet Jackson. Why? I think it's pretty obvious.
If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?
I really like when I see Cirque du Soleil in their traveling tent and how they create a whole world under there that travels and reaches so many people. I would want to do that.
One track of yours that you think defines you and why?
I can't pick just one! The project MY FAVORITE COLOR (Volume 2 EP) is a perfect definition of why — We are never the same way all the time. We have different sides and shades to our personality, and it should be embraced and celebrated.
And finally, do you keep up with any your friends and former group-mates; Aubrey O'Day, Shannon Bex, Dawn Richard and Aundrea Fimbres, collectively known as Danity Kane? If so, when's the last time any of you all spoke? And, that said, is there any chance of a DK reunion, either on stage and/or wax?
By the way, what about Diddy…Same question?
For both of these questions…The relationship is pretty much the same as it always was.
Is there anything I left out that you'd like to mention?
I was in the new musical, executive produced and starring Kandi Burruss of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, A Mother's Love, that opened in Atlanta November 22nd (through the) 24th. “Gold Mine” is on iTunes and the video is on Vevo.com.
