Red Bull Unveils the Nation’s Top Collegiate Dance Crews in 2017 Bracket Reel Competition
Today, Red Bull Bracket Reel, the destination platform that connects, grows and inspires the next generation of dancers, announced the top 16 collegiate dance crews for its 2017 video-editing competition.
In its most competitive year to date, the Red Bull Bracket Reel Dance Competition narrowed an extensive field comprised of more than 35 universities down to the country’s 16 most elite college dance crews. With submissions opening in September, students were invited to create innovative original videos showcasing their crew’s fresh moves and distinct swagger, for the rare prize of collaborating with one of the industry’s largest names: dancer, director, and cinematographer, Tim Milgram. All submissions were carefully reviewed by Red Bull and were chosen based on their technique, choreography, and quality of video editing.

Participating crews will create new dance videos each week, using original remixes of Red Bull Sound Select tracks by Tennyson, Pell, and Montell2099 with 21 Savage. Debuting with each round, the remixes come from producers Mr. Carmack, Chris Lake and JNTHN STEIN. With the first round of videos going live on Monday, Oct. 16, each team will be paired with another in head-to-head, single-elimination face-offs until one lucky team is declared the winner. The final videos will be posted on Monday, Nov. 13.
The submissions will be scored by an impressive panel of judges, including renowned Hollywood dancer and choreographer, Galen Hooks; Red Bull BC One All Star, Ronnie Abaldonado; and industry giant, Tim Milgram. Throughout the competition, judges will also post exclusive tips and insights to further inspire the community’s up-and-coming dancers. Moreover, the participating teams will have the opportunity to learn from competition judges through workshops and feedback.
“It’s so exciting to be able to not just watch and judge incredible talent from across the nation, but to also give feedback and guide them on how to improve,” said judge Galen Hooks. “The Bracket Reel isn’t just about competition, it’s about lifting people up too.”
In addition to the judges’ scoring, crews are encouraged to enlist the help of their home universities, as winning the People’s Choice vote will be a contributing factor to crown the winner in each round.
“One of the things I love most about Red Bull Bracket Reel is seeing all of the different styles each campus represents and how they interpret the music,” said judge Ronnie Abaldonado. “Each campus has a different vibe so it’s going to be fun watching everyone’s creativity.”
The winning team will earn a once-in-a-lifetime grand prize opportunity to collaborate with dance legend and producer, Tim Milgram, on an original dance video. With state-of-the-art technology and access to one of the world’s most popular dancers, the recording session is intended to inspire and empower the winning crew, who may not otherwise have access to top-tier resources. To further motivate the young dancers and give back to the dance community, Red Bull will give the second place team a personal dance lesson with Ronnie Abaldonado at their home university.
The winners will be announced each week on Red Bull Bracket Reel’s Facebook page, which is set to be a community for young dancers to collaborate and communicate about the dance community.
