Original Name of the Black Nation Found In Egypt

“Always remember seh di original name of di Black Nation is Shaba!” , words from the GRAMMY Award Winning, Pioneer of Jamaican Dancehall Music, Shabba Ranks. This quote comes from an interview in the late 90’s, but the wisdom itself is African and originates from a very ancient language, ‘Setswana’. What ‘Mr. Lover man’ was teaching long before the social media ‘Black Intellectual Movement’ is that “Shaba/Chaba” is an ancient Setswana word meaning “Nation”. This is a relevant point because Setswana [Sechuana] was an exclusive language only spoken in private between Royals and Priests. In modern Setswana the word has evolved to “Sechaba”, but means the same thing.

There are artifacts over 4,500 years old with the word “Chaba/Shaba” written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs because a 3rd Dynasty King assumed it as his Royal name. His Royal seal was found on several artifacts in Egypt, but that’s the most Egyptologists have been able to uncover.

The key point to know is that ancient Africans viewed nationality the opposite way we view it today. Originally the word nation was used to refer to all people on earth because to them there was only one nation. Due to the spiritual traditions of Africa, this word would best be used to describe what many people call the “Black Nation” in modern times. “Shaba” was a very special word to ancient people, even thousands of years before the earliest written records are found. Observing how important traditions are to African cultures, the word “Shaba” speaks to the organization of the ancient society. The original nation was organized into 12 tribes, each tribe organized into 6 clans, each clan into 100 districts, each district into 10 towns. And the only way to refer to all of them at the same time was to invoke the word for the nation, “SHABA!”.
