NYC-based alternative hip-hop artist Chukwu has returned with a brand new single, titled “Free.” It was premiered yesterday via Northern Transmissions. This is the second single released from his upcoming record, Process.

Prior to this track, The 405 premiered the track, praising it as “a listen as hypnotic as it is thought-provoking.” Chukwu’s debut LP Process is out 9/27 via Veriditas Recordings.

Chukwu is Toby Ekpunobi, NYC underground rapper, producer, and instrumentalist. His debut LP, Process, is old-school grit and lo-fi exotica samples brought to life with refreshingly raw production. Chukwu delivers with quick poetic shifts, rhyming about the creative process and the search for identity as an artist,. Melodic themes draw from obsessive crate-digging of Nigerian High-Life, Brazillian, and Afro-Carribean musics. Process was self-produced by Chukwu and mixed with Coleman Hughes (Coldman) and Patrick McGee (Acidhead). Chukwu’s production aesthetic serves the beats to the fullest with a general abandonment of excessive gloss; balancing field recordings of Igbo folk music with hard-knocking 808s and warm synths. With Process, Chukwu stakes his claim with a confident debut.

Chukwu’s live band includes Sweet Joseph (Lemon Twigs, Goodfight) and Andres Valbuena (Lemon Twigs)
Written, produced, and performed by Toby Ekpunobi

Mixed and mastered by Coleman Hughes and Patrick Mcgee
