Joyner Lucas Shares Title Track of Anticipated New Album

Joyner Lucas has announced the release of his hugely anticipated new single. “ADHD” is available today at all DSPs and streaming services.

“ADHD” is an undeniable game changer for Lucas, its galvanizing alternative-leaning hook and frank lyrical examination of his own attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder affirming the Worcester, MA-based artist’s ever-increasing strength for distinctive verbal brilliance and striking social consciousness.

“It’s all about having ADHD,” says the 2x GRAMMY® Award-nominated rapper. “Living with it. Being told that you have to be on medication to cope with it; the thoughts that go through your mind having it.”

“It’s definitely a different direction,” Lucas adds. “I feel like it’s more of a worldly record. I’m on the Chris Brown tour right now and as I’m watching and learning from the great Chris Brown and a lot of my other favorite artists, I’m learning to not put myself in a box. I feel blessed to be able to come out of the box and wanted to give people something different than what they’re normally used to hearing from me. I wanted to create more of a worldly record and show my range as an artist. You’ve already got the rap Joyner, you got the underground hip-hop Joyner, you got the storytelling Joyner, now it’s time to show people another side of me. That’s what ‘ADHD’ is.”

LISTEN TO “ADHD”

“ADHD” serves as the title track to Lucas’ ongoing ADHD project, a deeply considered, comprehensive piece of work that is being released individually to allow each song its own unique power and space before becoming part of a complete ADHD album.

“I’m just taking my time with it,” Lucas says. “I plan on being in the game for a while. People release a lot of albums conventionally. Me being so fresh in the game, I wanted to go against the grain and do things different. I didn’t want to drop an entire album all at once. This project has a lot of depth and a lot of the tracks on there, I feel like they need their own individual life, which is why I’ve just been dropping singles. I don’t want anything to go under the radar. I want to give each record its own individual life.”

“ADHD” marks the latest triumph in what is rapidly shaping up as the most successful and productive year of Lucas’ brilliant career thus far. 2019 kicked off with his first ever GRAMMY® Award nominations, including a “Best Music Video” nod for his landmark single/visual, “I’m Not Racist,” as well as a “Best Rap Song” nomination honoring Eminem’s worldwide smash, “Lucky You (Feat. Joyner Lucas).”

Freed at long last from his commitment to a major label, Lucas first heralded the ADHD project in late 2018 with “I Love,” which premiered exclusively via Apple Music’s Beats 1 as Zane Lowe’s World Record, and continued with the 2019 arrival of “Devil’s Work.” Fraught with frustration, rage, and sadness, the track sees Lucas paying his respects to deceased musicians such as 2Pac, Michael Jackson, and Nipsey Hussle, while also provocatively suggesting a few people “who deserve to die instead.”

“ISIS (Feat. Logic)” followed, marking the culmination of a long-standing beef between the two talented MCs. The track reached the top 25 on Billboard’s “Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs” chart while also earning wide-ranging praise, with Hot New Hip Hop deeming it a “hard-hitting, bars-heavy anthem.” Billboard praised the militarized “ISIS” video, noting “Lucas serves as a soldier on an army base for the duration of the clip, as he and Logic exchange scintillating bars on the front lines in uniform.”

“Broke & Stupid” dropped next, paired with a powerhouse companion video that displays Lucas’ compassion and commitment to his Worcester, MA roots by gifting a number of homeless residents of the neighborhood’s Lakeside Drive with haircuts, new wardrobes, and a much needed sense of dignity.

Lucas kicked off the summer with the kinetic “10 Bands,” his second partnership with the one and only Timbaland following 2018’s hit collaboration with Meek Mill, “Run It.” The single was joined by a wildly colorful companion video, co-directed by Lucas and his longtime filmmaking collaborator Ben Proulx (“I’m Not Racist,” “ISIS,” “Devil’s Work,” “Champagne for Everybody”).

“I wanted to drop a project in real time,” Lucas says, “with each individual record dropping in real time, according to where I’m at in my life. I just kind of want everything to be about the way that I feel now, about where I’m at now. When I dropped ‘Devil’s Work,’ that’s how I was feeling at that moment. When I dropped ‘ISIS,’ that’s how I was feeling at that moment. When I dropped ’10 Bands,’ that was my mood at that moment. The next record that drops, that’s the mood I’m at right now.”

As confident and charismatic on stage as he is in the studio, right now Lucas is traveling North America as special guest on his friend and collaborator Chris Brown’s epic IndiGOAT Tour, with arena dates continuing through October. “I’m blessed to have been asked to be a part of an R&B tour,” Lucas says. “I think a lot of that comes from Chris understanding that I’m not just a rapper. Chris has heard a lot of my unreleased stuff; he knows the direction that I’m going in. So on this tour, I’m performing a lot of different types of records and the crowd is responding really well. I can’t wait to drop some different types of records and move in a different direction, gain more fans and just move them through a different light.”

As if his prodigious musical output weren’t enough, Lucas is also a dedicated philanthropist, innovator, and entrepreneur. “ADHD” – as well as all previously released ADHD tracks – was created entirely on the groundbreaking artists platform, Tully. Founded in 2015 by Lucas and manager/technology entrepreneur Dhruv Joshi, the Tully App puts the power of production, promotion, and distribution into the hands of the creators themselves, enabling the artist and their teams to better utilize digital tools while streamlining invention and the collaborative process. Tully is available now via Apple’s App Store and Google Play; for more information, visit https://tullyapp.com.

Lucas, in his role as Tully’s leading artist and chief evangelist, is currently hosting Tully Songwriter Sessions in 20 cities across the United States, introducing the app and its services to both aspiring and established artists of all genres. Only 25 seats are available in each city – for details and ticket availability, visit http://tullyevent.pagedemo.co.

“What Tully allows me to do is take my ideas and have them in a single creative space,” Lucas says. “It allows me to have freedom. Tully is something that that has been very beneficial for me. I write all my music on there. Everything is consolidated – my lyrics, my beats, certain ideas that I come up with. It’s just an awesome app. We’ve got hundreds of thousands of users on there, using it actively, and it’s growing every single day. I like that we can take a lot of things that weren’t available before and give them to artists as tools for them to use to help improve on their craft.”

Long known for his indefatigable efforts in pursuit of social equality and the greater good, Lucas continues to pay it back with every move, not just doing good work as an artist but doing good works in the real world. He is currently offering support for single mothers across the country after a recent experience at the grocery store where he witnessed a local mom coming up short for her bill. The eternally activist MC not only stepped in to cover the cost, he took to his hugely popular Instagram and promised to give $500 each day to a single mother in need through September, suggesting his millions of followers – and “celebrity friends” – join him by using the hashtag #helpsinglemotherschallenge.

Born and raised up in Worcester, MA, Joyner Lucas fell in thrall to hip-hop right from the jump, first displaying his nascent rap skills at just seven years of age. Lucas focused and developed his unique talent and singular worldview on a series of underground mixtapes, leading XXL to declare him “one of the fastest-rising names out of the New England area.” He drew national attention with 2014’s “Backwords,” followed in 2015 by his breakthrough mixtape, ALONG CAME JOYNER and its breakout single, “Ross Capicchioni.” The track – and its bravely challenging companion visual – chronicles the true story of a Detroit gang shooting, told from the POVs of both the teenage victim and the shooter himself. “Ross Capicchioni” drew attention throughout the hip-hop universe, with none other than Busta Rhymes declaring himself “amazed…I can’t even put it into words.”

Lucas kept moving forward, displaying his astonishing lyrical skills with a memorable spot on the 2015 BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher and collaborating with fellow artists like Jarren Benton, Locksmith, TechN9ne, Statik Selektah, and Logic. 508-507-2209 arrived in 2017 and promptly rose to the top 10 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers Albums” chart, fueled by single/videos such as “Ultrasound,” “Just Like You,” and the devastating “I’m Sorry,” the latter joined by an equally companion video now approaching 55 million individual views via YouTube alone.

508-507-2209 also earned national acclaim, with XXL praising it as “a showcase of the sort of technical mastery that made Joyner into one of rap’s most exciting up-and-comers.” “Lucas’ music maintains its satisfying nucleus of incisive storytelling mixed with street edge,” raved DJBOOTH, “but all the details are more vivid and pristine. The production artfully matches the tone and themes of his lyrics, and Lucas raps with the confidence of an artist that can finally focus on their art and nothing else.”

That confidence fully manifested with 2017’s milestone single, “I’m Not Racist,” an unapologetic examination of the inescapable polarization that pervades any discussion of contemporary race relations. Hailed by CNN as “the brutal race conversation nobody wants to have,” the RIAA gold certified track and its companion visual – now with over 128 million views HERE – proved a viral sensation, drawing high profile media coverage spanning Complex, XXL, Revolt, Vulture, and the UK’s The Independent, among many others. Furthermore, the frankly remarkable “I’m Not Racist” video was later honored with a “Best Music Video” nomination at the 61st Annual GRAMMY® Awards.

2018 saw not only the birth of the ADHD project with the aforementioned “I Love,” but also a string of single releases – including “Stranger Things,” “I Don’t Die,” and “Just Let Go” – which marked the start of Lucas and Chris Brown’s collaborative work in progress, ANGELS & DEMONS. More recently, Lucas and Brown teamed up for “Need A Stack (Feat. Lil Wayne & Joyner Lucas),” an acclaimed highlight of Breezy’s 2019 worldwide #1 LP, INDIGO.

Indeed, Lucas is among hip-hop’s most in-demand collaborators and featured artists, including such shared tracks as “Run It,” Too $hort’s “Ain’t My Girlfriend (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign, Jeremih, French Montana, Joyner Lucas),” “Wrote My Way Out Remix (Feat, Royce Da 5’9″, Joyner Lucas, Black Thought, Aloe Blacc)” – originally featured on 2016’s chart-topping THE HAMILTON MIXTAPE – and of course, Eminem’s “Lucky You (Feat. Joyner Lucas),” the latter of which reached #6 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” – Lucas’ top 10 debut and highest chart placement to date – before earning a GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Best Rap Song.” Moreover, “Lucky You (Feat. Joyner Lucas)” proved an international blockbuster, ascending to the top 10 on charts in such far-flung locales as Australia, Canada, Finland, Greece, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The “Lucky You” companion video was equally popular, now with over 118 million views via YouTube HERE.

All told, Joyner Lucas has walked an idiosyncratically independent route, creating extraordinarily original work under his own terms and schedule, fully embracing the freedom that path allows. The gradual, focused release of the ADHD project shows a complex and gifted artist turning his disorder into a superpower, moving quickly between myriad ideas and angles and then later unifying them into an ultimate whole. Indeed, ADHD is being released on an ADHD schedule – that is to say, there is no schedule.

“Interestingly enough, it’s hard to focus on a plan,” says Lucas. “You know when you have ADHD, you’re kind of all over the place. It’s really just about dropping records and gauging things from there. Maybe I’ll drop the entire project extremely soon, but then again, it may not make sense to do that. Maybe I’ll let ‘ADHD’ live for a while and then stop. We don’t know. It just depends. You just keep going, you know?”
