Our Favorite Lyrics From Mother Mariposa’s New Video – “Changing Shape”

Admittedly weird in its own right, and definitely challenging the norm, Mother Mariposa has created another video that fits in their quintessential lineup of a modernized 80’s electronic soundscape. Exploring themes of the ever-changing universe, “Changing Shape” invites the listener to move past their thoughts and fears, bucking the system in order to improve it. The video is comprised of a set of home videos from the band while on their recent tour with The Dandy Warhols, and features Mother Mariposa in their natural habitat – on the road, and on stage. Interspersed with the band’s home footage is retro videogame-like scenes of color, the universe, and other mind-bending visuals. Madrona Redhawk, an Instagram artist and influencer, also appears frequently in the video transforming and shape-changing the mask in her usual brilliant and innovative manner.

It’s important to note that “Changing Shape” is a showcase of the band’s dynamic beginnings as it is from Mother Mariposa’s recent debut album The Monarch Key. The Dandy Warhols’ Peter Holmstrom also collaborated on the track playing guitar on a very rare and unusual guitar device called The Gizmotron that was once used by Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Paul McCartney. Overall, “Changing Shape” showcases an infectious groove containing heavy flirtations with a psychedelic romp that wraps itself in a brave new world spark as Mother Mariposa blazes their own sonic trail. We included some of our favorite lyrical lines from the track to give you an inside look into what is making this band one to watch for 2020.

“Enlightened One, in the dark
Rub the sticks, make a spark”

“plant the seed, inside the head, breathe in wisdom, break the bread, the onions we keep, the layers we shed”
“universal, eyes and ears
magnified, funhouse mirrors
see within, see without
what you think you know, you have to doubt”
