Potatohead People Team Up With T3, Illa J & Kapok on “What It Feels Like”

Returning with the first single from their forthcoming LP Mellow Fantasy, Canadian hip-hop producers Potatohead People draw inspiration from 90s boom bap, future soul and classic jazz to create a rich musical soundscape.

Enlisting the help of long term collaborators Kapok and J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J on their new single “What It Feels Like”, the pair are also joined by one of their early musical influences T3, from the legendary hip hop collective Slum Village. Layering lo-fi drums with live horns and infectious rhythms, the track is low slung groove teeming with the pair’s eclectic musical influences.

“This song was originally created during the same session as “Quest For Love” and “All Alone” when Illa J was visiting Vancouver. It wasn’t fleshed out enough to make it on to our last album but we’re so glad that we took our time with this one and that it turned out the way it did”, the pair explain.

Made up of Vancouver multi-instrumentalists/producers Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical, Potatohead People began their creative career with a series of EPs, with their project Kosmichemusik quickly making its way to artists such as Illa J. Bringing in the duo to  produce his critically acclaimed, self-titled album, the pair worked alongside Kaytranada, who co-produced Illa J’s “Strippers” with the production duo. After their first full length LP Big Luxury in 2015, the creatives followed up with 2018’s ambitious project Nick & Astro’s Guide to the Galaxy, which garnered support from the likes of Soulection, Jazzy Jeff, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, DJ Spinna and Big Boi.

“What It Feels Like” is out now. Tune in.
