Speed Walton- “A Breath of Fresh Air in a Polluted Industry”

Written by: Julz Mancini

When you think about the music that consumes today’s airwaves, what comes to mind? Same flow, similar production, same concepts, and similar styles. A lot of us have been conditioned to accept these characteristics of today’s music as normalcy. What happened to the artist’s with edge? What happened to the music that touched our souls and assisted us in releasing our demons? Where are the creators who go against the grain; who architectures songs that don’t have a cookie-cutter layout? One Cincinnati, Ohio native has brought these qualities back into his music resulting in a plethora of opportunities and open doors for his career. His name is Speed Walton.

Combining hip-hop, live instrumentation, and pop culture, Speed was adamant about counterattacking commercial rap. With versatile lyrics, clever word play, and vivid story-telling, it was clear that Speed had an ear for music unlike others in which would later play a huge part in his success. Many artists search for their calling throughout their entire career, unfortunately, never discovering their true sound. Speed, however, found his niche for coupling diverse samples with witty and cognizant rhyme patterns.

Prior to this artist being known as Speed Walton, he initially emerged as “Buggs Tha Rocka” whom performed as a lead in a band called, “Gold Shoes”. Having the honor of touring with major acts such as John Mayer, Kings of Leon, and Wiz Khalifa, to name a few, Speed obtained a visual of triumph. It was during this time that he changed his name to Speed Walton and transformed into a solo artist. He released his debut album in 2014, titled “Scattered Thoughts of An American Poet” and went on to release a duo project with Cincinnati legend Donte Fleming titled, “Space Invadaz”. Due to his consistent work ethic and musical abilities, Speed acquired a joint venture deal with Talib Kweli’s “Javotti Media” in 2015.  Between 2012 and 2016, Speed Walton conquered the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. With several nominations in different categories and winning the Hip-Hop Trophy every year, Speed has been acknowledged as a legend in his hometown. After these accolades were obtained, Speed made the decision to begin a new venture and moved from Cincinnati to Los Angeles to further pursue his music career.

Since moving to Los Angeles, Speed has moved upward in his career. His most recent album titled, “Real Name Speed”, gives his fans a taste of his imagination, portraying his edge and diversity. As the listener engages with this album, they will notice that Speed combines funk with soul while staying true to the roots of hip-hop. As I listened to “Real Name Speed”, I noticed that many of the songs provoked me to expel sincere emotion; so much so that I struggled to maintain my composure while writing. It is rare that I experience this and gives the reader a good idea as to the amount of depth Speed’s lyrics consists of. With multiple tracks within this project, there are a few favorites in which I will share with you. “Late Nights 1 AM” starts off with a smooth beat and female vocals, setting the tone for the rest of the song.

“My grandma dying only made me more focused. Big ma, I know you’re looking over me, rooting for my better place. I say that smiling as these tears running down my face. I know, time of the essence. Won’t waste another day. Sometimes, in life, we be standing in our own way.”

Speed Walton doesn’t hold back with the truth, allowing the listener to self-reflect. His lyrics are filled with conscious words that force his fans to ponder. One song after another, Speed leaves the listener intrigued to hear more of his authenticity.

“Engraved Memories” is a personal favorite, causing a rush of emotions with a soft yet powerful hook and heart-felt lyrics. This song was executed perfectly.

Chorus:“I was hoping I’d get you off my mind. But you still haven’t left after all this time. You’re engraved inside my memories. How come things aren’t the way they’re supposed to be?

Verse: I know I’ll feel this void for infinity. Till the lord send for me and the fat lady singing to me in a symphony. I know we gotta all go eventually. Just wish it was an encore essentially. So I’m praying there’s an after-life. You used to hold me tight and give the best advice. Just know I’m thankful for everything that you sacrificed. Since your sunset, I ain’t had a sober night.”

It is apparent that Speed utilizes personal experiences to form his music, digging deep into his heart and soul to provide relatable content.

“Night Fall” is a combination of harmonies, samples, lyricism, and a catchy hook. Speed’s delivery throughout this song is unique and hypnotizing.

“Who you call on, when the night fall? I know nobody ever wants to be alone. Take a hit of this. Get up in the zone. Let me be the one you call on when the night fall.”

With all of the word play within this track, I encourage you to allow Speed to get you in your zone while listening. I can guarantee you will have his music on repeat, as I have, leaving you reciting his lyrics and turning to his project every chance you get. “Real Name Speed” is one of the best projects I’ve set my ears on this year. I encourage you to stream Speed Walton’s music.

After a split from his former label, Speed is preparing for a new project to be released in early 2021 titled, “Sorry I’ve Been Busy”. The project will be executive produced by a long-time friend and collaborator Sal Dali who recently produced the new Black Though track, “Good Morning” featuring Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, and Killer Mike. Along with new music, Speed’s fans are eager to see what’s next for the captivating artist, whether songwriting or performing on tour with music icons such as Erykah Badu and Mos Def. One thing is for certain, there is a lot more in store for this unique and talented artist.
