HBO Honors Tina Turner’s Life, Legacy and Influential Impact in Music Through Art & Radio Programming

HBO will launch a multi-media virtual experience to celebrate Tina Turner’s life, legacy and impact on culture beginning this Friday. The two-day exclusive will amplify the themes and experiences depicted in upcoming HBO’s original documentary TINA, directed by Dan Lindsay, T.J. Martin and produced by Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn, Diane Becker through music and art. HBO partners with NTS Radio to present Tina Turner: Rulebreaker, a five-hour block of exclusive programming in partnership with NTS Radio. This exciting programming will give fans a space for exploration across genres of music, culture, and interests, to celebrate the premiere of the HBO documentary film TINA.Exclusive Tina-inspired artwork created by BIPOC artists will be released on social media on Saturday. TINA premieres, SATURDAY, MARCH 27 (8:00 PM- 10:00 PM ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

In support of the themes and experiences depicted in HBO’s new original documentary TINA, directed by Dan Lindsay, T.J. Martin and produced by Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn, Diane Becker, HBO developed a multi-media virtual experience to inspire fans to celebrate Tina Turner and her legacy. The full day of NTS programming will pay homage to Turner’s incredible on-stage energy, athleticism, and resilience as a Black woman pioneer who’s paved the way for generations of musicians.

HBO commissioned custom artwork from artists Reyna Noriega, Thaddeus, and Andrea Pippins. Their original designs to highlight the themes in the film to enhance engagement across social media.

Reyna Noriega:

Reyna Noriega is a Miami-based Black and Afro-Latina visual artist, author, and educator who works across a variety of mediums, from graphic design, to painting, digital illustration, and photography. Through simplified shapes and forms in bold and vibrant shades, she portrays figures of people of color, architectural spaces, and landscapes.

Thaddeus:

Thaddeus aka Hippy Potter is a NYC based artist who creates bright and thought-provoking graphics centered around amplifying Black voices while also focusing on diverse representation, black queer joy and racial equality among other important topics. Using vibrant technicolor hues and expressive shapes. His inspiring compositions simultaneously evoke powerful and playful emotions.

Andrea Pippins:

Andrea Pippins is an illustrator and author who has a passion for creating images that reflect what she wants to see in art, media, and design. Her work has been featured in Essence Magazine, The New York Times, and O: The Oprah Magazine.

FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 2021

11AM – 11:40AM ET | Tina Turner: In Focus

Diving into Tina Turner’s demos, b-sides, and rarities. In:Focus is an NTS in-house content series where we dive deep into the musical back catalog of our favorite artists. We uncover hidden gems and classics and contextualize them in a mix of only that artist’s music. There is usually no host / talking / intro or outro – they are typically music only shows made by the in-house NTS team. For the Tina project, we will create an intro and outro and also provide the copy for these in advance of recording.

11:40AM – 12:30PM ET | Resilience with Arlo Parks

Exploring the theme of resilience, taking inspiration from the resilience that Tina has shown throughout her life and career, as shown through the HBO documentary. The show will be 50 minutes in length, a combination of tracks played that have been specially selected by the artist, interspersed with chat. The artist will be provided with a list of thematic prompts ( allowing them to ruminate on certain subjects and their personal experiences and interpretations. The artist will also talk about why they chose specific tracks and what those tracks mean to them.

12:30PM -1:30PM ET | Tina Turner: Uncovered with Alima Lee

Exploring the best tracks that have sampled Tina Turner, songs that have been sampled in her tracks, covers, and songs that she covered. The show will be broadcast live on NTS and then archived on the NTS website.

1:30PM – 2:20PM ET | Trailblazers: Pioneers of Music with Nao

An hour of badass musicians who didn’t let their race or gender stop them from breaking through. Tina mentions wanting to be the first black rock and roll star to play stadiums like The Stones, and it’s interesting that she focuses on her race rather than her sex or age. This show is an homage to Tina and the other female and black music pioneers who paved the way for generations of musicians.

2:20PM – 3:10PM ET | Defying Boundaries with Kelsey Lu

Female musicians who can’t be pigeonholed by genre. The show will be 50 minutes in length, a combination of tracks played that have been specially selected by the artist, interspersed with chat. The artist will select the artists they would like to talk about and play tracks from each artist to demonstrate the scope of their work and the difficulty in ascribing them to any one genre.

3:10PM – 4PM ET | Artist to Stage with Dawn Richard

Tina was an incredible live performer, with an intense athleticism on stage. The way she performed was as important as the songs themselves, not least in the way she brought the intensity of gospel music style delivery to rock. In homage to Tina’s life on the stage, Dawn Richards selectis her favourite live performances through the ages.
