Who Is Emerging Singer Songwriter Elle Mitchell?
Part of the fun of this job is discovering new talent that could well be a part of the musical conversation for years in the future. To be clear, that takes culling through hundreds of submissions until you find something that is just flat-out undeniable. Elle Mitchell and her single Prodigal is one such discovery and I have to say I was blown away by the strength of her voice and depth of emotion in this song.
The official line is that Elle Mitchell is a seventeen-year-old singer-songwriter based in Washington, D.C. At the young age of eleven, Elle began developing her songwriting abilities as a way to convey authentic and vulnerable messages to her emerging audience. During the Summer of 2020, she attended New York University’s prestigious songwriting program, where she collaborated with like-minded artists and composers to hone her artistic passion. There, she uncovered a deeper sense of appreciation for the songwriting process. Elle Mitchell is planning to release more music consistently throughout 2022.
The Hype Magazine wanted to know a bit more about this dynamo and so we got her to weigh in on a few things
From the outside looking in, who is the artist Elle Mitchell and how would you define your style?
In three words, I’d describe myself as charismatic, authentic, and empathetic. I’m truly an old soul, and my style is shaped by my depth and my vulnerability. I’ve often been compared to Florence + the Machine and Christina Perri, not just vocally but stylistically as well.
What was the defining moment that brought you to the music industry?
When I was eight years old, I went on a camping trip with my family in the Rocky Mountains. On the last night of the trip, one of our guides was strumming a gentle melody on his guitar as we sat around the fire, telling stories beneath the stars. I started to improvise a tune, and before I knew it, I had written my first song. That was such a beautiful moment, and I think back to that night as marking the true beginning of my journey.
Tell us about your new single Prodigal and what it means for you.
To me, ‘Prodigal,’ is a tapestry of the emotions behind teenage escapism, which is such a central part of the coming-of-age narrative. In this way, the symbolic presence of a fire weaves these emotions together, igniting as the narrator faces the dire consequences of their actions.
What do you want listeners to get from your music?
My hope is that someone out there is listening to my music, and that it makes them feel heard and understood. I believe the true beauty of music lies in its power to bring emotions to life in a way that nothing else can.
How would you describe your creative process?
I think of my songwriting process as dynamic and fluid. Some days, I’ll sit at the piano with a concept fully formed in my mind, while other days I’ll struggle for hours to write a single line. Personally, I think the struggle is so critical to the creative process, so it’s important to stay grounded by our hopes and our purpose. The things we love don’t always come easy to us.
Do you always have a defined purpose for your songs?
I wouldn’t say I have a defined purpose for my songs. Instead, as I’m creating a song, I define the signature emotion I want to shape the narrative around.
