Budding Designers Can Now Put Their Sketchbooks Away

The fashion industry is valued at three trillion dollars. So for small independent designers and non branded players starting out in the fashion world, it may not seem like they have much of a chance of receiving a significant slice of that market. However, the decentralization of the creative industries brought about by the rise of blockchain and NFTs is beginning to change those outcomes.

Twenty-one year old luxury fashion brand Faith Connexion has an ambition to bring about that change. They recognise that new, independent designers are a demographic in fashion which has largely been uncatered for – and they are willing to do something about it. Estimating that independents can have access to a $450 billion market, Faith Connexion wants to empower them to take that slice by providing resources via an innovative, decentralized Web3 project and platform known as “Faith Tribe”.

An Open Source Fashion Design Platform

Faith Tribe has developed the first fully decentralized and community-owned ecosystem for the collaborative creation of fashion items. What they’ve established as “open source fashion” is referring to the pioneering of inclusivity in Faith’s design processes. This is the opposite approach to high-end, very exclusive brands who intentionally make it difficult for anyone to get a foot in the door, let alone submit a design that will be taken seriously by fashion companies. Faith Tribe, on the other hand, allows designers and collaborators from all walks of life to be able to contribute to their designs, their fashion, and various individualized items.

A Design Studio at Your Fingertips

Within the platform is a Designer Studio which was built to help designers bring their designs to life digitally and physically. Faith Tribe is a fashion production ecosystem which designers are invited into, where they are then given all the tools required to design clothing. Faith Tribe can then mint these designs as NFTs, which can also have a physical counterpart (NFC’s). This can be taken a step further by putting designs into on-demand physical manufacture. In doing so, Faith will source quality materials such as leather, Tweed and knitwear out of Portugal and Italy. Finally, they will market the designer’s product and then sell it on their e-commerce marketplaces, as well as in the Metaverse and gaming. Faith Connexion have fashion tech partners each step of the way – they have a module for digital designing, avatar creation, NFT/NFC minting, a module which instructs the Faith Tribe team to launch on demand manufacturing, a module for marketing, and lastly, a module where Faith can resell the product for you on their e-commerce site.

The Business Is Yours

So how does the business work for independent creators, and what about royalties?

Faith Tribe wants independent creators to be able to use their tools, having frankly communicated the extent to which they want to run their business. Choosing to create through Faith’s open source design architecture could be a collaboration between Faith Connexion and that designer, but it doesn’t have to be. A collaboration with Faith Connexion would give the designer a percentage of royalties from sales, and Faith would retain the IP of the design. However, the open source fashion modules are really intended for designers who are working on their own brand. That’s the vision – Faith Connexion wants to build businesses for people.

Just Start The Process

But maybe you’re a designer who isn’t quite at that stage yet. In this scenario, a creator could collaborate with Faith Connexion, but only sell their fashion design digitally as an NFT just to try things out. Then later on down the line, they might decide they want to push that design further into both physical and digital NFTs, and then maybe even into actually manufacturing a physical collection. One of the designers at Faith Connexion might then decide that the design should be produced in eight different colors – imagine the many possibilities.

The Democratization of Fashion

Faith Tribe is opening up an inclusive fashion ecosystem, and when people enter into that framework, Faith’s aim is to get them into the fashion business as fast as possible. Today, if you want to enter the fashion industry, you could send in a resume to a big or small brand, work or apprentice, and then maybe you get a shot at designing. But through Faith Tribe, you determine how far you want to go in the business through your effort, talent and how much you are embraced by the community. These things will determine and empower independent designers and creators to sell both online and in the Metaverse – with the potential there to build your own brand. This is a project with the culturally impactful goal of democratizing fashion, which in time, will hopefully liberate many creative minds from getting stuck in the process of succeeding within this opportunistic yet daunting industry.
