From the First Female Stunt and Action Director in Iran to direct an Action/Adventure/ Horror in Mexico.
The groundbreaking female director “Maryam Pirband” made “Vertical” in 17 days of shooting. An international action/ Adventure/ Horror feature written by “Ruben Arnaiz,” from Spain, and filmed in Leon Guanajuato, Mexico, with crew members from different countries. Women have been directing films from the beginning of cinema, but when it comes to inviting a director born in Iran and based in Hollywood to direct a complicated story in action, adventure, horror genre in the Spanish language, which she doesn’t know is a particular case. 
The pre-production began a few years ago when the writer Ruben Arnaiz tried to start production with him as director, but due to many problems, the project stopped. Andrew Dasz, producer and actor, promised to resume the project and finish it; he had met Maryam Pirband on the set of her film in Los Angeles before. So he contacted Maryam who had a solid experience in this genre. She was the first professional female stunt, the first and only female action director in Iran. She worked in different countries, made successful award-winning films, she was the head of the jury panel or a jury member in international film festivals. She traveled alone to different places in the Middle East, where no one wanted to go and established film festivals. She had workshops worldwide, graduated in movie directing in Iran, got her master’s in screenwriting from Azusa Pacific University, and now she is a Ph.D. Student in philosophy and visual arts, and European Graduate school.
A couple of years ago, she earned a green card type for extraordinary artists and moved to LA, where she was invited by BBC immediately, plus a couple of film festivals to join them as a jury member. Her first film in California “Fermysk”, was about a Kurdish girl who is pregnant after being raped by ISIS. Maryam was a witness to the ISIS attack in Iraq by herself. All these, plus so many different things she did in the industry, became odd when you find her interviews where she said: “I was not allowed by my family to work as an artist, so my first BA was in business, and I was working in a big company. I started to work in cinema secretly, but after so many newspapers and magazine covers were published about me as the first female action director/stunt, they realized that. This girl fought a lot to be a female director of the very restricted society of Iran besides finding a way to convince her family. Her previous feature film was “Dandelion Season,” which She made in California. A beautiful story of the festival journey, so far awarded at any festival participated.
After Maryam joined “Vertical’, finding investors was not difficult. In January 2022, pre-production began remotely from Los Angeles, Madrid, and Guanajuato in Mexico. Months later, with the script corrections by Maryam Pirband, Vertical was filmed in 17 days! Edited in Istanbul, Marco Webra in Italy is working on the music, color, and sound designing team working in Mexico. Habib Zargapour is the supervisor of Special Effects, and Setareh Samandari is the visual effects artist. They have worked on countless Hollywood productions, from “Jumanji,” “Blade Runner 2049”, “The Adam Project,” “Star Wars: Episode I,” and many more productions.
