Jenn Connor Releases New Track, “Insecurities”

Canadian musician, teacher, and entrepreneur Jenn Connor has recently returned to the forefront of music with the release of her new single, “Insecurities.” In this project, she exhibited a blend of electro-pop and dance music, which have recently gained mainstream popularity.

“Insecurities,” as the title suggests, is a song about the singer’s darker thoughts. The artist paints an interestingly bleak picture as she sings about how the voices in her head tell her negative thoughts. Jenn indulges in these, which gradually deteriorates her, going against her better judgment. Unfortunately, this is a relatively realistic portrayal of insecurity.

The songwriting here is clever and well thought out, with Jenn only painting her lover with positive words. Negatives only come up from Jenn’s head, so she applies these to her partner despite his best efforts. It’s a sad song, though it’s all dressed in upbeat, catchy electronic pop music to which you’ll find yourself shaking your head.

The music is composed chiefly of synths and Jenn’s singing, which lends to the poppy club vibe. The mix is simultaneously light and captures the feelings in the song. Considering the subject matter, it’s an upbeat-sounding tune, and we quite like the juxtaposition.

Overall, “Insecurities” is a strong electro-pop single that is highly danceable. We’d be unimpressed if someone listened to the song without at least slightly bobbing their head up and down. It’s a real earworm, and once it burrows deep into your ear, it latches on and stays there. The song benefits from the colder dance beat juxtaposed with the warmer verse sections.

Pop music, in particular, is often sentimental and bright, so addressing a more serious topic like this is a striking and clever choice. Jenn’s delivery works excellently here, making it worthy of repeat listens.
