Adanna Duru – Nappy Hour

Before reaching over a million followers on Tik Tok for her personality, before being chosen to be on Adam Levine’s team on The Voice for her performance, and before millions viewed her among the Top 10 on American Idol, all of which took place when she was a teenager, Adanna Duru recognized the beauty in her voice before she could even read.

Raised in Orange County, California, Adanna remembers struggling with her identity and not feeling confident outside of her ability to sing, simply because she was the only Nigerian girl. Whether it was the curiosity of her classmates about her skin complexion, the need to touch her hair, or the wonder on their faces about the dark lines on the palms of her hands, Adanna always felt like an outsider.

Unbeknownst to her at the time, she was commanding attention simply by her name. Correcting the mispronunciation of her name was the first step in building her confidence. Having the support of her Nigerian mother as a preteen to pursue her dreams rather than forcing her to conform to traditional ideas of success was also very empowering. Because of her belief in her talent and the opportunities it has given her, Adanna has been able to move beyond the limited perceptions of others and champion the depth of who she is as an artist.
