J.Lauryn: Billion-Streaming Songwriter Ignites as a Solo Artist.

Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, and Kesha started in the music industry by writing hit songs for other artists before leaping into the spotlight. Now, Hawaiian-born songwriter J.Lauryn – whose songwriting contributions have earned over 3 billion streams – is plotting her way to solo success.

Once an artist reaches superstar status, it’s often easy to forget how they started in the music industry.

Before she hit gold with ‘Just Dance,’ Lady Gaga was hired to write songs for Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls. In the late ‘00s, Bruno Mars produced and wrote for artists like Alexandra Burke and Sean Kingston before leapfrogging over them when he achieved global fame.

J.Lauryn`s dream has always been for her stint as a significant songwriter to eventually pave the way for her music career.

Her only real problem is that her songwriting for other artists has been too successful, keeping her constantly in demand. J.Lauryn made her name a force to be reckoned with after co-wrote songs for Ziggy Marley’s 2016 self-titled album. The LP in question won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, opening doors for J.Lauryn throughout the industry.

The eight years since then have been a blur of million- and billion-streaming songs. She co-wrote ‘Goodbyes,’ by Post Malone and Young Thug, which currently has over 1.2 billion streams on Spotify. She also co-wrote ‘Gone’ by BlackPink’s Rosé (300 million streams), ‘SG’ by DJ Snake, Ozuna, Megan Thee Stallion, and Lisa of BlackPink (272 million streams), and ‘00.00 Zero O’Clock’ by BTS (227 million streams). Almost everything J.Lauryn has touched in recent years has led to seismic activity on streaming services, meaning she was always called upon for her talents.

But J.Lauryn has recently stated that she’s finally ready to give her solo music career the focus she passionately believes it deserves. In 2023, the artist released four singles. The first two, ‘Bad To The Bone’ and ‘Pretty Hi’, were shared with the announcement that they would form part of J.Lauryn’s brand new album, scheduled for release in early 2024. (She had previously released her debut album, Golden Year, in 2017, and it’s considered something of a bona fide hidden gem).

In January, J.Lauryn shared the album’s third single, ‘Who The Man.’ As with her other releases, ‘Who The Man’ was a sold statement of intent about the type of artist she wanted to be in the years to come. These are bold, brash, reggae-soaked hip-hop and pop songs. If the stars align correctly, they are songs that might turn a successful songwriter into a globally famous household name.

Watch for her new album to see if J.Lauryn finally achieves the stardom she seems destined for.
