Nitara Reaves talks winning the Queen City Award and upcoming events

Nitara (@NITARASOULMUSIC) “Songstress” Reaves has been penning songs she has been performing for over 20 years. As a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Nitara got her start at the age of 5, learning Broadway and show tunes in Ms. Donna’s School of Dance.
From the age of 8 until today, Nitara has been the leader in more than 20 Praise and Worship teams, including the New
Jersey Mass Choir, Greg Hoover & the Charlotte Community Singers, and many others.

Nitara currently performs regularly at area venues such as The Blumenthal Performing Arts Essence and The Harvey B Gantt Center, where she opened for Lenny Williams, Ann Nesby and Next. Nitara also teaches vocal lessons in Charlotte, NC, and she also has her own Radio Show called “Nitara’s Love Notes.” Just this past week, Nitara Reaves won the 2016 Queen City Award, for Best Female R&B vocals.

The Hype Magazine sat down with the Songstress over the weekend to talk about her cosmetic line, recently winning Queen City Awards for Female R&B Artist of the Year, when we can expect more music from her and radio show called Nitara’s Love Notes. You can see the interview in its entirety below!

Can describe your experience in Broadway and show tunes?

Hahaha! That’s funny. I have never actually performed on Broadway, although it is a goal of mine. When I was little I used to pretend that I was performing on Broadway and I used to go around singing a lot of show tunes. I just really liked show tunes. Looking back, I guess that’s how I got some of my vocal training. Me with my hairbrush performing show tunes in the bathroom mirror.

You have been writing songs for over 20 years now, what still inspires you to continue to write?

I was born on Feb. 14, which is Valentines Day and all my life I have been about love. I like to write songs about love, I like to experience love and I even have a radio show named Nitara’s Love Notes. So love inspires me to keep writing and I like to write about love from my own life experiences.

You recently won the Queen City Awards for Female R&B Artist of the Year. What were some of the emotions you felt when you heard your name being called?

This is a funny story, because the night that I won the Queen City Award, I wasn’t even there. I was performing in Jacksonville, FLA. thinking I had no chance to win because Charlotte NC has so many great artists. My manager, Jeff Gardner called me to congratulate me on winning and I just thought he was playing around and I was like “stop playing”. Then I realized he was serious and an overwhelming rush of emotions overtook me. I felt happiness, relief, triumph and too many other emotions to list. Mostly, I felt glad that Charlotte had recognized me for all the effort that I put into my music. I was on top of the world.

You have been able to book shows regularly can you give some advice to some of the struggling artists looking to book shows to showcase their talents?

This can be a real struggle for new artists, no matter how talented they are. My advice is to take the time to build a solid team around you. You need people that you can trust and that can get the job done. This may take a while, so don’t get discouraged. Make sure you take the time to perfect your craft. Remember, performing live is way different than recording in the studio. My show is all about my audience.

You also have your own radio show where can we find you on and at what time?

My radio show is called Nitara’s Love Notes. We have so much fun doing that show. We talk about every angle of love there is and sometimes it can get a little raunchy. It can be found on www.nluvnetwork.com and www.illmuzikradio.com

You recently launched your cosmetic line can you tell us about your products and where might we find them?

My cosmetics line can found at www.nitaracosmetics.com. I actually wear all of my products and I just love them. I am getting a lot of men that are visiting the website to get makeup for their girlfriends. It is fantabulous (that’s my word, LOL).

What can we expect from this new adventure headed into the rest of 2017?

This new adventure is being led by God almighty himself. So I have some inspirational music as my way of thanking God and all of the things that He is doing and has done for me and my family. You can expect some fun stuff as well like my song “Thick Love” which is an anthem for all my thick sexy ladies.

Can we expect some new music as well headed into the ladder part of 2017?

There is most definitely new music coming. I love to create music, so I am always in the studio creating something new. My 18-year-old son Stix happens to be one the hottest producers on the planet (that’s my opinion, LOL). He creates most of my music. He is also the drummer and music director of my band. So 2017, be on the look out fro music from Nitara.

Who are some artist you would like to get into the studio with in the future?

I would love to get in the studio with R. Kelly, Tank, Trey Songz, Laila Hathaway and Charlie Wilson to name a few. I would like to work with anyone to be quite frank. I enjoy meeting new people and working with a lot of different people. It gets me thinking in new ways. I love it.

How often do you get a chance to attend Charlotte Hornets and Carolina Panthers games being that you are a native of Charlotte North Carolina?

Okay. This seems a little bad, but I want you to know that I do support my local teams here in Charlotte NC. Because of my busy schedule with performing, recording in the studio, my radio show, my makeup line and tending to my family, I just don’t get time to attend as many games as I would like. But GO PANTHERS!
