Fashion Trends with Celebrity Makeup Artist Matin Maulawizada

Matin Maulawizada is a celebrity stylist well known in the fashion and entertainment industry. The founder of Afghan Hands, an organization that supports disenfranchised women, did not initially start out in the world of fashion. A master of Molecular Biology, he was first introduced to the beauty business by a college roommate, which led him to pursue makeup artistry part time while in school. Feeling discontent with his field of study, Matin decided to pursue his true calling in the world of fashion as a makeup artist. Now he joins The Hype magazine in a live satellite one on one, to reveal this spring’s biggest beauty trends, tips and tricks to get the look.

Can you tell us about some of the beauty trends you’re seeing this season?

Absolutely! The beauty trends for spring/summer are not unique for this year but you will see them every year. A lot of pinks in peaches play out and become, you know, the prominent color for the season. But the one thing that we see different this season is the textures. There was a lot of play on heavy textures for the last few months and especially fall and winter had a lot of heavy liquid lipsticks and foundations that were heavier on the skin. But now you see more of our sheer play on textures, so whether it’s a foundation or concealer, its sheer, its glow here! Same goes for eyes and lips! So, you see a lot more sheer color entrance.

Do you have a favorite way to create this look?

Yes! It’s all in and techniques in the one thing I always thought the key to good makeup is to must show beautiful skin whether one has beautiful skin or not. It’s ways to create it. So, for the skin, of course you want to moisturize it. You want to exfoliate and the same thing with lips. It’s extremely important to exfoliate. Chapstick total hydration has a beautiful lip scrub, which looks like this! It’s a sugar base and what you do is use it with a little bit of water and it takes away the dead skin cells and it just keeps the lips nice and conditioned. It also makes them look beautiful. Then when you put on your lip balm, it just looks extremely healthy and gorgeous. Something for the face. I always try to make the skin look beautiful with a good moisturizing product in a primer and then I always go with a very sheer wash of foundation.

If you don’t know what I mean, if you’re looking at the mirror and you see the product on top of your skin, that means that you’re using too much and it’s a heavier coverage. So, what you can do is instead of switching out your foundation completely, you can use a dampened sponge for example and that you can kind wash off color all over your skin and that way you will even out the skin tone without looking like you have foundation. Then you go on with concealer.

This takes a little bit more time than normal. You just basically, very strategically cover where you need with a concealer in that way – it’s just when a person looks at your skin, it looks like you don’t have any makeup on. Another way to do the skin around the lips are by using the concealer around the lips instead of lip liner. A lot of women used to use lip liners and when you do sheer lip liners could look a little bit vulgar and heavy. So, it’s best to use a concealer to really sharpen the edges of the lips and make the lip contour, look beautiful and then you can go on with your color.

I’m using the total hydration plus tent in rose petal, which is one of my favorite colors for the spring, because it just looks good on everyone, and it’s one of those foolproof colors that you can just put on in the back of the car. You don’t have to worry about a mirror, you can just keep going and it just adds a hint of color. It looks healthy and happy and that’s the one way to really approach it and make the skin look good. The look of no makeup.

What’s your go-to makeup trick that every woman should be using?

I think the concealer is something that I would like almost everyone to master, because it really saves on makeup throughout the day. I always send them with the concealer pen in a total hydration moisture plus tent that’s something that goes into every bag that I send my clients away to condition the lips. The total hydration the conditioning care is important, because there’s nothing worse than having dry lips no matter how beautiful you do your makeup. I think for men and women, dry lips are dry lips, and it’s never attractive. Also, something to think about you know skincare and anti-aging products for the lip which is one of the most delicate skins on the under body

Do you have any tips for starting to master the natural look on our own?

Priming the skin and prepping the skin is the most important. so, as we said, it’s very important to scrub the skin on the face, just to scrub the body to scrub the lips that way you’ll have a natural glow to begin with. The shearer you go, the better it is. So, it’s you know, to stay on trend, and to stay fresh for spring and summer is to always use the sheer as possible. Just enough to cover the flaws without going overboard with foundations and textures.

Finally, where can we go at The Hype magazine for more information?
