Always Never – Always Never

Crafting emotionally complex relationship stories with the delicate melodies of R&B and the sonic heft of trap, Toronto duo Always Never makes music for the post-midnight hours. Culminating a rapid rise that saw the duo rack up tens of millions of streams on all platforms, Always Never shares Always Never, their debut album, premiered by Complex. Collecting 14 story-driven and deeply textured cloud R&B jams, Always Never stands within and apart from the busy Toronto urban music scene, setting itself apart from the crowd with delicate and nuanced vocal performances from singer Patrick Kirschner over bass-heavy, yet somehow light-as-a-feather productions from Dean Guilbault, influenced in equal measure by PartyNextDoor, 6lack, and Metallica. The follow-up to 2017’s Call Me Over EP, the new album boasts previously released tracks such as the viral hit “Wylin’,” which has over 5 million combined streams, and the recent “Dangerous,” which has over 200k combined plays since its release in July, as well as popular singles “Millions,” “No Good,” and “Morgan Freeman.”

Always Never explains the album: “This album is a huge moment for us and probably one of the most challenging things we’ve ever had to do. The idea of making a body of work this big used to scare the shit out of us to be honest. We’re also control freaks when it comes to our music so we actually wrote, recorded and produced every song in our little Toronto apartment. We’ve been through a lot since starting Always Never and we’re not afraid to admit that. I think what people will connect with the most on this project is how honest and relatable it is.”

Always Never is a mysterious, Toronto-based artist/producer duo–a project conceived online with the expressed purpose of making a modern soundtrack for the surreal hours between leaving the club and the first rays of sun. They released “Tragedy” as the end product of Dean’s final exam at audio engineering school only to see the track go viral on SoundCloud, then Apple Music and Spotify without any playlist support. Their next single, “Wylin’,” turned even more heads, earning coverage from Genius and gaining prominent placement in Spotify’s All The Feels (1.2M followers), Mellow Bars (680K Followers) and Alternative R&B (703k followers) playlists. With “Wylin'” earning more than 700,000 streams per month on Spotify alone, Always Never proves the formidable artistry that turns a buzzing singles artist into a respected act. See Always Never live for the first time at The Mod Club in Toronto on October 10th.
