Vodafone Conducts UK’s First Holographic Call Using 5G Technology
It seems the next generation of mobile tech has arrived in full force…here in the States mobile phone giant Verizon is making a massive run to introduce its 5G platform and across the pond in England, Vodaphone just conducted the region’s first ever 5G holographic phone call…we probably should have guessed that with the film Kingsman showed a holographic meeting of operatives across the globe that soon we’d see it outside the celluloid realm!
England and Manchester City Football Captain, Steph Houghton appeared as a live 3D hologram
Thursday 20 September, 2018 Vodafone conducted the UK’s first live holographic call using 5G technology. This follows the announcement in June this year that seven cities will become Vodafone 5G trial areas from next month.
The call from Vodafone’s Manchester office featured England and Manchester City Women’s Football Captain, Steph Houghton MBE. Using 5G technology, Steph appeared as a live 3D hologram on stage in front of an audience at Vodafone’s UK headquarters in Newbury.
Vodafone also confirmed that in the coming weeks it will switch on 5G trials in the first of its city test beds, following end-to-end 5G testing at its Newbury-based laboratory. Manchester and Birmingham will be the first of Vodafone’s seven UK 5G test cities to go live, underlining a commitment to develop a super-fast and reliable network across the UK. We will also roll out 5G to popular UK holiday destinations such as Cornwall and the Lake District during 2019, so the UK’s cities aren’t the only places to benefit.
Commenting on the groundbreaking call, Vodafone’s Chief Technology Officer Scott Petty said:
“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to prepare for 5G with a multi-billion pound investment in new fibre infrastructure and technology. I can confirm today that we are ready and good to go with UK-wide city and rural 5G trials starting from next month.”
Vodafone UK Chief Executive Nick Jeffery said:

The speed of 5G will enable applications as diverse as remote robotic surgery and 4K gaming on the move.
