Perot Museum Abloom With World-Renowned ‘The Art of The Brick’ Exhibition

With longer hours of daylight for discovery and fun, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science is ready to spring forward with a fresh season of exploration. From The Art of the Brick traveling exhibition to spring break Discovery Camps and new events and initiatives such as A Day in the Life: Paleontologist and Stop Food Waste Day, the Perot Museum will be abloom with adventures for all ages and interests.

Considered a top 10 global must-see exhibition by CNN, The Art of the Brick features the world’s largest display of LEGO art. From re-imagined versions of Michelangelo’s David and Van Gogh’s Starry Night to an original interpretation of Dallas’ signature winged horse Pegasus, the exhibition pays homage to a timeless toy while inspiring ingenuity and creativity. Visitors can get up-close with fan favorite Yellow, a life-size sculpture of a man ripping his chest open with thousands of yellow LEGO bricks cascading from the cavity. (Yellow has gained pop-culture fame appearing on fashion labels, album covers and even in Lady Gaga’s music video “G.U.Y.”)  Plus, a hands-on, interactive LEGO brick gallery – dubbed The Science of the Brick – lets guests discover their inner architect, engineer and artist with open creative spaces and building challenges including a tilt maze, music box, LEGO drag race and more. “Spring brings a refreshing lineup to the Perot Museum, and we’re especially excited for guests to experience the fascinating traveling exhibition, The Art of the Brick, which has received rave reviews around the world,” said Dr. Linda Silver, Eugene McDermott CEO of the Perot Museum. “And the second installment of our new program A Day in the Life provides a unique opportunity for visitors to spend time with a scientific expert – in this case, our chief paleontologist Dr. Anthony Fiorillo – to explore the world of a working scientist and discover how Museum research is expanding scientific knowledge on a global scale.”

Other highlights include a May The Fourth Be With You sci-fi weekend extravaganza that includes a themed sleepover, an adults-only Social Science, 3D films and spring break activities and extended hours.

Below are details on the don’t-miss spring happenings.

THE ART OF THE BRICK (through Aug. 18, 2019). Featuring intriguing works of art made exclusively from one of the most recognizable toys in the world, The Art of the Brick is a critically acclaimed traveling exhibition boasting the world’s largest and most elaborate display of artwork constructed using only LEGO bricks. Created by world-renowned contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya, The Art of the Brick is designed to inspire ingenuity and creativity with original pieces and re-imagined versions of some of the world’s most famous art masterpieces including da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and a gallery showcasing an innovative, multimedia collection of LEGO-brick infused photography produced in tandem with award-winning photographer Dean West. In addition, the exhibition includes The Science of the Brick, a hands-on creative space presented by Texas Instruments, Inc. featuring building challenges, open play spaces and more that promote STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning for all ages. Presented locally by Highland Capital Management, The Art of the Brick requires a surcharge.

3D FILMS. Slip on some 3D glasses, relax and let a fascinating 3D film transport your mind. Featured in The Hoglund Foundation Theater, the Perot Museum’s spring film lineup includes Extreme Weather 3D(through May 23, 2019), Oceans 3D (through May 23, 2019) and America’s Musical Journey 3D (through May 23, 2019). SOCIAL SCIENCE: SCIENCE FICTION. Seeking a Friday night sci-fi-fun destination? Look no further! On April 26 from 7-11 p.m., Social Science: Science Fiction will offer adults 21 and up an evening of interactive exploration, discussions, signature cocktails and food by Wolfgang Puck, music and more. Learn how throwback sci-fi gadgets have informed today’s technology, delve into artificial intelligence and robots, and explore the science that goes into creating special effects for superheroes and futuristic movies. Tickets, which sell out fast, are $20 for members and $29 for non-members. Social Science is supported by Highland Capital Management and Brown-Forman Corporation. SLEEPOVERS. Do the dinosaurs come alive at night? There’s only one way to find out! An overnight adventure at the Perot Museum grants children ages 6-14 and their adult chaperones behind-the-scenes access to the Museum’s 11 exhibit halls complete with exclusive demonstrations, hands-on discovery, a late-night snack, 3D film and light breakfast to round out the experience. Spring dates are April 12 (All-Girls STEM), May 4 (May The Fourth Be With You) and May 24 (Video Game Science). Sleepovers are open to groups of all sizes – from a parent and child to entire organizations. Costs range from $45-$55 per child and $30-$45 per adult chaperone. Don’t snooze, reserve today!

A DAY IN THE LIFE: PALEONTOLOGIST. On April 20 at 8:30 a.m., embark on a journey to find out what a paleontologist does during an excavation or on a research trip in Alaska with Dr. Anthony Fiorillo, the Perot Museum’s chief curator and vice president of research and collections. What is it like to travel to the coldest and most remote areas? What does a paleontologist wear? How do they stay safe from bugs and bears?  Explore the answers to these questions and more by enjoying a meal that a paleontologist would eat in the field, making a fossil mold, learning about Arctic dinosaurs and creating a dinosaur memento with other explorers. Also join Dr. Fiorillo for an exclusive and guided look at his very own paleontological discoveries in the T. Boone Pickens Life Then and Now Hall. Tickets – which include general admission – are $25 for members and $30 for non-members. Supported by the King family.

STOP FOOD WASTE DAY. Approximately 40% of food produced in the U.S. is never eaten. On April 24, the Perot Museum and its Wolfgang Puck Café will join Kroger, Recycle Revolution and City of Dallas Zero Waste for the 2^nd annual Stop Food Waste Day, an international day of action to fight food waste. Activities will take place from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and include live demonstrations, food scrap activities and a “waste not” cook-off. Free with general admission.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU CELEBRATION (MAY 4-5). Celebrate the power of the Force with special activities, films, performances, character meet and greets and treats! This two-day event is an opportunity to dress in costume and connect with the light and dark sides of the Force. Discover the science behind those famous movies by exploring robotics, futuristic technology and life on other planets. Enjoy saber battles on the Plaza, themed music, food, crafts and more. Activities are free with general admission. Special showings of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakes and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi require a film ticket and additional charge. Presented by Highland Capital Management and Lockheed Martin.

SPRING BREAK. Need to satisfy stir-crazy kids? Appease their spring fever with special daily activities, Discovery Camps and extended hours. Skip the line and reserve tickets online at perotmuseum.org.

At select times during spring break (March 9-17), visitors can enjoy experiments, story times and live science shows such as Fire and Ice and Superhero Science, take part in catapult building, sheep brain dissections, and hands-on fossil exploration to name a few. Plus, little ones ages 5 and under can enjoy spring crafts in the Moody Family Children’s Museum daily until 3 p.m. Check the website for detailed schedules. Activities are free to members and included with general admission for non-members.

From March 11-15, children can entertain their brains at Discovery Camp: Storybook Science (pre-K) and Discovery Camp: Medieval Adventures (K-4^th grade). Pre-K kiddos will love learning about the science behind storybook characters such as Rapunzel and the three Billy Goats Gruff as they build a boat to travel across the sea, engineer towers and bridges, and explore “things that go,” weather and stars. K-4^thgraders can enter the Middle Ages and become a member of the Royal Court while embarking on a quest full of medieval chemistry, castles and catapults! There they’ll join fellow alchemists, masons and knights in concocting “magic” elixirs, building and defending bridges and uncovering how people from the Middle Ages used art, science and engineering to improve their lives.

HOURS. General hours of operation for the Perot Museum are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

SPRING BREAK HOURS. During spring break (March 9-16), the Museum will stay open daily with extended hours until 7 p.m. and member-only hours 9-10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 10-11 a.m. on Sunday. The Museum will resume normal hours on Sunday, March 17.

TICKETS. Museum general admission is $20 for adults (13-64), $13 for youth (2-12) and $18 for seniors (65+). Museum general admission is free for members. Children under 2 are always free. The Art of the Brick requires a surcharge of $10 for adults (13-64) and seniors (65+), $8 for youth (2-12) and free for children under 2. Member tickets are $7 for all age levels.
