Singer/songwriter Abby J Hall shares concept behind new single “Neighbour”

Abby J Hall is a singer/songwriter from Burlington, Ontario. Having been in the studio over the past year, she is excited to be releasing new music over the next couple months. Everyone has a story to tell. Abby loves nothing more than to write some of those stories down and put them to music.

Her new single, “Neighbour,” was written with Toronto-based singer/songwriter, Darrelle London, while eating A&W on London’s back porch, gazing into the neighbouring backyards and imagining what kind of people lived there. As a society, we don’t always take the time to truly know someone who may live right next door – we build both literal and metaphorical fences.

You can listen to the new single ‘Neighbour’ and check our interview with Abby J Hall below!

What makes ‘Neighbour’ different from your past work?
The biggest difference between Neighbour and past work is that it was the first co-write I had ever been a
part of with Darrelle London in 2016. It was awesome bouncing ideas off of each other. Secondly, I tend to
write most songs with more of a personal attachment where Neighbour is mostly a questioning society as
a whole and reflecting on how we can work better together which was cool to approach songwriting from
that angle.

Can you describe the concept behind the track?
One of my favourite things to do is people watch and imagine what someone’s life is like. We only know
life from our perspective and can only ever see something from our own eyes. It’s easy to get lost in the
world we create for ourselves. Darrelle and I also really wanted to highlight how there is good in the world
when we truly look for it. We’ve all heard the saying, “love your neighbour as yourself,” but what does
that actually look like? I wanted this song to ask that question.

How would you describe your artistic evolution throughout your career?
It’s fun to see how my songwriting has evolved over the years. It’s cool to listen to different types of music
because you never know when you’ll pick up something that could inspire a new way of writing. I love the
way Julia Michaels phrases in her songs, it’s like a dance with the melody and lyrics. When an artist can
dance with the story, and melody it’s awesome and what I aim for.
What’s been the biggest change in your life over the past year?
The biggest change in my life is I’m finding my ground in who I want and don’t want to be in this industry.
Every artist’s path looks different so I think it’s important to redefine what success means individually.
Learning to find contentment in the journey!
What song by another artist do you wish you had written?
ooooh that’s a super tough one, there are SO many! I am deep into Folklore right now so probably Exile,
by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. I’ve always loved the way she describes situations, feelings, lyrically! That
the song is also a stunning duet. The whole album is wow.
And finally, where can readers keep up with what you are doing?
