British Nigerian Hip Hop Artist BREIS Returns With ‘Wahala’ Featuring Nneka

As he gears up to release his highly anticipated fourth studio EP and most important project to date Arise & Shine later this month, dynamic South London hip hop artist and musician BREIS is proud to release his brand new single and very first offering of 2020 titled ‘Wahala’. The new single, which follows up from the well-received solo cut ‘Stay Diligent’ from last summer, brings BREIS together with German Nigerian neo-soul royalty and award-winning veteran musician Nneka.

Produced by legendary Brixton DJ and producer Keith Lawrence, ‘Wahala’ is a vintage reggae and hip hop fusion offering with added jazz and afrobeat sensibilities, which sees BREIS in top lyrical and storytelling form, as he switches between rapping in English and Nigerian Pidgin, while Nneka shows herself as the ever consummate artist and performer, with her effortless vocals, harmonies and infectious melodies that bring the track further to life.

The word ‘wahala’ means trouble in Nigerian Pidgin, and with the record, both BREIS and Nneka address the truth that no matter who you are or where you are in this world, you will encounter some trouble or the other, but it all comes down to how you deal with that ‘wahala’ when it comes. For the visuals, which were filmed in South Africa, BREIS linked up with director Vee Makausu to retell an age-old tale of ‘wahala’ by way of adultery, heartbreak and violence.

Speaking about the inspiration behind his ‘Wahala’ single, BREIS says, “This was the first song I wrote in Nigerian Pidgin, it feels good to be able to finally share it. The take away from ‘Wahala’ is that everybody has some sort of wahala to deal with, be smart in how you respond to it. The lockdown has affected different people in different ways, some have lost loved ones, businesses have folded, people have had to reassess their relationships, and for some, mental health has been a problem. In the midst of all of these things, how we respond is key”.
