Stretch and Bobbito, the legendary hip hop radio team who introduced the world to a multitude of unsigned artists who would eventually become the biggest names in ’90s rap, are celebrating the show’s 30 year anniversary by sharing Freestyle EP 1, a collection of remixed and remastered freestyles from Notorious B.I.G., Big L + Jay-Z, and Method Man + Ghostface Killah.

Originally recorded on cassettes, the remixes have been painstakingly remastered into high-quality digital audio as well as remixed by Stretch and Bobbito with original music by their band The M19s Band. Freestyle EP 1 is the first of three EPs featuring remastered freestyles from the show’s guests. The EPs will culminate into a full album of reworked freestyles set to be released in 2021, effectively preserving music history.

Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia debuted their new radio show on Apple Music Hits on October 22nd. Their two-hour bi-weekly episodes reboot the spontaneous on-air vibe the duo pioneered back in the ’90s. The lifelong friends and DJs mix vintage freestyle moments with rare cuts ranging across all genres and eras.

The freestyles pay homage to the original The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show – a pillar of New York’s hip hop scene, broadcast from the tiny WKCR studio at Columbia University from 1am-5am, unobstructed from the FCC’s profanity regulations. The show hosted revered figures of New York’s rap scene, inspiring a generation of both artists and fans. Freestyles were an integral aspect of the show, giving unsigned artists a way to gain recognition, and in some cases, grab the attention of record companies. Stretch and Bobbito’s career-making show revealed the raw talents of iconic rappers including Nas, Eminem, Jay-Z and more.

Early on, Stretch was spinning at all the top downtown clubs, while Bob was doing A&R plus promo for Def Jam Records. They both utilized their connections to hip hop’s burgeoning ecosystem, which quickly translated to global reach and impact.

Chronicling their history of the 300+ roster of guest stars who performed on their show, the DJ combo produced their documentary Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives. The film exposed their narrative, and the artists they affected as well as that of their loyal listeners, and premiered on Showtime than Netflix.
