0Butch Vig On 5 Billion In Diamonds’ New Album, 2021 Plans For Garbage, Productivity & More
Last month 5 Billion In Diamonds — the legendary producer trio of Butch Vig, Andy Jenks and DJ James Grillo — returned with a new single and album announcement, sharing the cinematic and psych-laden track “Weight Of The World” via Brooklyn Vegan. Additonally, NME shared an exclusive interview with the band and talked to Vig about what to expect from the album, the magic of film, his band Garbage’s plans for 2020, and if the world will ever have another “Nirvana moment.” And that Billion In Diamonds record Divine Accidents will be out on November 20th via MAKE Records.
Butch Vig has a lot more to speak of than just 5 Billion In Diamonds and Garbage, of course. As the producer Nirvana’s Nevermind, The Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish and Siamese Dream and L7’s Bricks Are Heavy, beyond albums by Green Day, AFI, Foo Fighters and the Silversun Pickups, one cannot imagine where rock music would have wound up without Butch Vig’s intervention. In other words, would the glam-oriented hard rock of the 1980s ever have ended its reign over rock radio had Vig not existed? No way of knowing, but I think not, as much as I do enjoy Trixter, Firehouse and Warrant.
On November 3, 2020, I had the pleasure of interviewing Butch Vig via Zoom, as embedded below. We spoke about 5 Billion In Diamonds, life during COVID-19, future plans beyond 5BID, personal archiving, productivity and plenty. An unbelievably nice and pleasant individual, to say the very least.
