0Kevin McDonald On His New Film “Boys Vs. Girls,” “The Kids In The Hall,” Outkast, Winnipeg & More
Acclaimed, clever, light-hearted comedy Boys vs. Girls — from Gravitas Ventures in the United States and Mongrel Media in Canada — is now available across all VOD platforms for audiences enjoy. This wholly Canadian-crafted comedic gem was directed by Mike Stasko (The Bird Men), and hearkens back to cherished 1990’s camp comedies starring beloved comedy icons Colin Mochrie (Whose Line is it Anyway?), Kevin McDonald (The Kids In The Hall), Eric Osborne (Degrassi), Rachel Dagenais (The Birder), Shaun Benson (Amazon’s The Boys), Dante Albidone (Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy), Leo Choy (Schitt’s Creek) and Jesse Camacho (Netflix’s Locke & Key). An excellent cast, to say the least.
The story in the film was loosely-inspired by writer/director Mike Stasko’s experiences going to camp as a child at YMCA Camp Kitchikewana in Northern Ontario. Set in 1990, a summer camp is forced to go co-ed for the first time for financial reasons. The counselors don’t like the change and a battle of the sexes ensues. Boys Vs. Girls recently swept the film festival circuit including the Chicago Comedy Film Festival (“Best Feature Film & Audience Choice”), WorldFest Houston Film Festival (“Best Comedy Feature Film”), Canadian International Comedy Film Festival (“Best Canadian Feature”), Central Michigan International Film Festival, Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival (“Best Supporting Actor” for Kevin McDonald), London International Filmmakers Festival, Florida Comedy Film Festival (“Best Writer,” “Best Ensemble Cast” and “Best Supporting Actor”) and Hamilton Film Festival.
On December 22, 2020, I had the pleasure of interviewing the aforementioned Kevin McDonald, who has been gracing screens and stages around the world at high-level for around 30 years. McDonald and I discussed Boys Vs. Girls, of course, but also talked about the upcoming The Kids In The Hall series for Amazon, how he wound up in the Outkast “Roses” video, Canadian comedy and music, life in Winnipeg during COVID-19, and plenty more.
