The Secret of Creating Powerful Designs

The design phase is one of the most crucial aspects of product manufacturing. This phase not only contributes to the aesthetics of a product but also helps establish a connection with the target audience. Meaningful designs, be it an automobile, piece of furniture, or a smartphone, aids product marketing and promotion. To benefit from it, many manufacturers invest thousands of dollars into designing their products by hiring acclaimed industrial designers. They invest effort, time, and money to create designs that resonate with a product’s purpose while being visually pleasing to the consumer.

When it comes to industrial designers, names such as Arne Jacobsen, pioneer of Scandinavian designs; Marcel Breuer, the face of the modern design movement; Achille Castiglioni, father of Italian designs, and Karim Rashid, the Prince of Plastic, appear at the top. While these are the best industrial designers of past centuries, other young and talented individuals follow in their footsteps, stealing the spotlight in this modern era. One of these young designers, who uncovered the secret to innovative designing, is the Louisiana-born Jackson Hedden. He occupies a prominent position in the world of product design through his prolific luxury designs of luxury products.

Jackson, at 27, has his work on permanent display across the globe. His love for designing turned into a passion, and it led him to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. He also spent time under Karim Rashid’s apprenticeship, an Egyptian-born designer described as the “most famous industrial designer in all the Americas” by Time Magazine. Working under such a talented and experienced artist helped the young Hedden groom his skills and develop his craft.

Bringing a Unique Philosophy to the World of Designing

Today, Jackson Hedden is known for his exclusive designs, including luxury goods, furniture, lighting, surface design, brand identity, and packaging. What sets him apart in this modern era is his design philosophy. He emphasizes that a design becomes meaningful when it combines aesthetics with empathy and function. As per Hedden, these three elements are critical for achieving perfection in design. Combining these three elements is the secret to creating powerful and meaningful designs.

On multiple occasions, Jackson has discussed how “design is fueled by the dreams of what could be.” To support his designing philosophy, he talks about how aesthetics represent the beauty of a dream, empathy lays the foundation for building a personal connection, and function turns a dream into reality. Jackson firmly believes in incorporating these three elements in all his designs, which brings all his work into the limelight.

From Rig Ma Roll to Particle Board

Jackson’s creativity and out-of-the-box design sense came out front and center when the “Rig Ma Roll” was produced. Jackson and 12 other SCAD students were asked to design and develop a vehicle that would offer ‘nothing other than fun.’ Jackson actively participated in it and played a significant role in creating the “Rig Ma Roll”, a kid/adult powered play mobile. It was the beginning of Jackson’s career in designing. After graduating from SCAD as an industrial designer in 2015, the passionate designer began working under the “Prince of Plastic” from Canada, Karim Rashid. While helping him develop his skills and improve his craft, it opened doors to numerous opportunities. During this phase, Jackson got a chance to design products from water bottles to furniture. He even developed several luxury consumer goods, leading him to become the industrial design lead at Karim’s studio, but Jackson did not stop. He landed an opportunity to work with an LA-based design firm, RKS Design.

He spent three years working with RKS, and within this period, he was enlisted to design for clients like LEGO, Boston Scientific, and 3M; these are just some of the brands Jackson has had the honor to work with in the past couple of years. With his passion for creativity and determination to become an industry leader, Jackson launched his private design studio, named ‘Jackson Hedden’ in 2019.
