0Jeremy Garelick On Founding American High, Future Plans As A Filmmaker, Joel Schumacher, Making Movies For Hulu & More
American High is an innovative production company specializing in high school comedies, as largely inspired by the John Hughes era of films. The company interestingly operates out of a former school building in Syracuse, New York, and its list of recent successes includes Big Time Adolescence, Banana Split and The Ultimate Playlist Of Noise. Plan B is its latest film release, as co-produced with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (producers of Harold & Kumar and Cobra Kai), Josh Heald, Counterbalance Entertainment’s Dina Hillier, Ryan Bennett, Will Phelps and Matt Lottman; I enjoyed interviewing Plan B stars Kuhoo Verma and Victoria Moroles on behalf of The Hype Magazine last month.
Jeremy Garelick founded American High in 2017 following work on The Wedding Ringer, The Hangover and The Break-Up. In 2019, American High signed a deal to produce feature films at a pace of 4 per year. That summer it produced Hulu’s very first original film The Binge, which starred Vince Vaughn and was directed by Garelick. Recently, American High wrapped production on the comedy Sex Appeal, which stars Mika Abdalla, Jake Short, Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster and Paris Jackson. And if you check the IMDb page of Garelick, you will see plenty of our American High productions in various states of completion, including Sid Is Dead, Sick Day, The Insane Laws, and The Swimsuit Issue.
On June 7, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jeremy Garelick via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond talking about the past, present and future of American High, we talked about his journey as a filmmaker, the movie that inspired him to get into filmmaking, working with Joel Schumaker, when he knew he had a career in Hollywood, future plans, and even Jackie Mason. More on Garelick and the American High team can be found by clicking here, here, here, here and here.
