Rhys Darby On His New Comedy Special “Mystic Time Bird,” Upcoming Projects, L.A. & More

Comedy Dynamics is the home of the new stand-up comedy special Mystic Time Bird from actor and comedian Rhys Darby. Released on November 2, 2021 through its hybrid distribution system — including Comcast, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Spectrum, Peacock, Dish, Google Play, Vimeo and YouTube — the special features the Kiwi comic dishing out physical comedy, obscure observations, sound effects and silly banter alike. In other words, Darby’s usual yet unique comedy lense.

I first discovered Rhys Darby in his timeless role as the hapless, well-meaning band manager Murray from HBO’s Flight Of The Conchords, but millions first saw him in the Jim Carrey film Yes Man. Regardless of how you initially found Darby, he will be starring alongside Taika Waititi in the upcoming HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death and also stars in Waititi’s upcoming film Next Goal Wins. You may also recognize him from his work within Modern Family, What We Do In The Shadows, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Bob’s Burgers, The Venture Bros and The Simpsons, to name just a few of Darby’s credits.

On November 8, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rhys Darby via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Mystic Time Bird — his fifth official stand-up special, we spoke about his upcoming projects, how he became an in-demand voice actor, life during COVID-19 and why he moved to Los Angeles in the first place. More on Darby and his new special can be found online here, here, here and here.
