0Gatsby- “Ghost”
Emerging R&B singer Gatsby releases his new single “Ghost.” The ambient synths begin “Ghost” with background vocal, before a crisp kick drum and snares kick in. Gatsby’s vocal hooks follow with nostalgic lyrics and hushed whispers about meeting somebody else. The song then kicks into second gear with louder, more melodic singing about trying to move on. It’s then that we finally understand what the ‘Ghost’ in the title is referring to; the act of ghosting (i.e, not responding to messages).
The visual does an amazing job of turning the lyrics into life. Throughout the visual, Gatsby reminisces about the times he shared with a woman that eventually ghosted him, which caused him to have conflicted emotions.
Gatsby is venting his frustrations of being ghosted, an unpleasant experience everyone has. As far as his influences are concerned, Gatsby cites Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars to name a few. He actually said that Michael Jackson is his favorite artist of all time in a previous interview. His dad was a radio DJ who played funk, soul and house so he was always surrounded by music. He’s certainly not shy about his strong preference for pop but actually this track has more alternative R&B leanings and would appeal mostly to fans of Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator. However, unlike Frank Ocean, this track is less about the vocal gymnastics and more about the simple, repetitive and catchy vocal hooks. And unlike Tyler the Creator, this song is less about expensive and flashy production and more about capturing the essence of a pop song.
“Ghost” is being distributed through 300 Entertainment’s new platform called Sparta.
